Cultural Highlights
Qinhuangdao received its name from a legend that the first emperor of China, Qinshihuang, visited the city’s coast 2,200 years ago. He sent two fleets to explore its offshore islands where he believed immortals dwelled. One of the fleets eventually traveled to Japan where the sailors settled, bringing Chinese culture to Japan. There are still temples in Japan for commemorating this event.
Based on this legend, an annual dock sightseeing festival has been held in June since ancient times. Citizens gather near the dock to pray for favorable weather, buy souvenirs and sample snacks.
Tourist Attraction
Famous scenic spots in Qinhuangdao include the Beidaihe Beach Resort, Old Dragon Head, Mengjiangnu Temple, Yansai Lake, and Shanhaiguan.
