Xiamen is a prefecture level city in the southeast of Fujian Province. The city’s downtown area is located on Xiamen Island - the fourth largest island in Fujian. Xiamen is one of the nation's five special economic zones.
Xiamen has a subtropical monsoon climate, with average annual temperature of 21°C and rainfall of 1200 mm. Typhoons hit Xiamen four to five times each year, mainly between the months of July and September.
Xiamen Port is located in Jinmen Bay, by the estuary of the Jiulong River. In 2009, its freight throughput ranked 15th in China. Transport options include the Yingtan-Xiamen Railway, and two highways connecting Xiamen with Zhangzhou and Quanzhou.
Economic Features
In 2010, the industrial output of enterprises above designated scale in Xiamen reached RMB 367.08 billion, up 33.9% over 2010. The city realized value-added industrial output of RMB 102.68 billion, accounting for 50% of the city's total.
The pillar industries of Xiamen are electronics, machinery and chemicals. In 2010, the industrial output of the three industries reached RMB 276.9 billion, accounting for 75.4% of the city's total.
The electronics industry is Xiamen's largest pillar industry. Major products include computers, handsets, TVs and radios. Dell Computer, Lenovo Computer, Prima TV, Amoi Electronics and NEC are the major investors in this sector. Dell has opened two factories in Xiamen. By 2009, Dell has over 6,000 shops in China, including outlets in Guomei and Suning.
Machinery is another of Xiamen's pillar industries. XGMA Machinery Corp and King Long Motor are two of the main companies. XGMA is a major engineering machinery producer in China, and its sales of mechanical loaders have ranked first in the country over the last few years. In 2009, the company's assets totaled RMB 5.6 billion.
Tourism is a major industry in Xiamen's service sector. It is one of the ten most popular cities in China for tourism. In 2009, a total of 25.2 million domestic and overseas tourists visited Xiamen. Tourism revenue reached RMB 32.5 billion, up 7.2% over 2008.
In 2010, Xiamen's foreign trade up 31.7% to US$57 billion,including export value of US$35.3 billion and import value of US$21.7 billion. Electronics and machinery were the main exported products. Within the same year, utilized FDI reached US$1.7 billion, up 0.6% over 2009.
Cultural Highlights
Xiamen was built 620 years ago. It was nicknamed "Island of Aigrette" because of the high number of aigrettes living on the island. The Xiamen International Marathon has been held annually in Xiamen since 2003.
Since 1997, the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) is held in Xiamen on September 8 every year. CIFIT is currently China's only international investment promotion event aimed at facilitating bilateral investment. It is also the nation's largest global investment event, and the only one approved by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI).
Tourist Attraction
Major tourist attractions in Xiamen include Gulangyu Islet, Wanshi Botanical Garden, Nanputuo Temple, Hulishan Fortress, the International Conference & Exhibition Center, Bailuzhou Park and Xiamen University. Xiamen University is one of the nation's most beautiful universities due to its geographic location. It is adjacent to the sea and surrounded by scenic spots such as a lake, an ancient fort and a temple.
Xiamen food is part of South Fujian cuisine, combined with a Taiwanese and Chaoshan flavor. Seafood dishes are particularly renowned for their freshness and light spiciness. Famous snacks include the Nanputuo vegetable dish, meat-rice dumplings, peanut soup, fried noodle tread, fried clams, noodle paste, Xiamen pie, leek pancakes, thin cakes, sea worm jelly, fried sleeve-fish, braised cabbage and fried liver.
