Cixi, a county-level city under the administration of Ningbo, is situated in the coastal area of eastern Zhejiang Province. It is situated only 70 km from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, one of the most important deep-water ports in China. The country’s economic hub, Shanghai, is just on the other side of the sea, while Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang province, is only 145 km away to its west.
Ningbo Lishe Airport, 60 km away on the southeast of Cixi, offers flights from Ningbo to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Seoul and other major domestic and international cities. One end of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge (connecting Hangzhou and Shanghai) is located in Cixi. Additionally, the Hangzhou-Ningbo expressway runs through the city, connecting it with the other two major cities in Zhejiang.
Economic Features
In 2010, the city's GDP amounted to RMB 75.77 billion, up 15.6% from the previous year. Its industry and service sectors are the main contributors to the city's economy, accounting for 60.5% and 34.4% of the city's GDP respectively.
In 2010, the gross industrial output of the city amounted to RMB 142.6 billion, increased by 44.6% year on year. The pillar industry include machinery ( increased 34.4%), chemicals (increased 40.9%), equipment manufacturing (increased 45.3%), transportation equipment manufacturing (increased 47.2%), Non-ferrous metals processing industry ( increased 127.8%) , textile (increased 22.4%). The combined industrial output of the pillar industry was accounting for 63.7% of the city's total. Industrial output of high-tech industry rose rapidly at 47.8% year on year to RMB 25.18 billion in 2010.
Cixi is a famous attractions in China. In 2010, more than 5.44 million tourists have visited the city, of which foreign visitors reached 37,400, up 26.8% and 20% year on year respectively. The total revenue from tourism industry exceed RMB 3.89 billion, 28.2% more than that of 2008.
In 2010, its export value increased 34% year-on-year to US$6.88 billion, while import value climbed 38.2% year-on-year, reaching a total of US$1.32 billion. The total foreign trade value amounted to US$8.2 billion, increased 34.7% than that of 2009. The U.S., Germany and India were the three largest export destinations, which export value amounted to US$1.03 billion, US$380 million and US$294million respectively.
Cultural Highlights
Cixi, which means kindness (Ci) and rivulet (Xi), received its current name from the historically famed filial son, “Dongan”, and his mother. The city’s history can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476BC), when it was under the Jurisdiction of the Yue State. It was established in Qin Dynasty (221-206BC). Cixi was once called “Gouzhang” but was renamed “Cixi” during the Tang Dynasty.
Tourist Attraction
As the birthplace of Chinese porcelain from the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220) to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and an important starting point for the “Marine Porcelain Road”, the Shanglin Lake of Yue Kiln has attracted many tourists. It is located in the mid-southern region of Cixi.
Another three popular tourist attractions are the Mount Wulei Scenic Spot, Minghe Ancient Town and Yu’s Old Residence. The Mount Wulei Scenic Spot, located in Shanglin Lake, contains the most famous ancient Buddhist temple in eastern Zhejiang province. Minghe Ancient Town, situated beside Mount Wulei and Duhu Lake, is reportedly even more scenic than beautiful Suzhou.
