Located in the center of Shandong Province, Jinan is the provincial capital, as well as one of the coastal cities which are opened to foreign investment, and one of the nation's fifteen sub-provincial cities. It covers a total area of 8,180 sq km and has a population of 6.8 million. Under its present administration, there are six districts, three counties and one county-level city. Jinan has a temperate monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 14? and rainfall of 650-700 mm.
Limestone is one of the city’s major mineral resources. Jinan yields limestone of the highest quality and more types of limestone can be found here than anywhere else in China. It also has an abundance of coal and iron. The proven coal reserve in Jinan totals 331.6 million tons, with sixteen coal output locations. Jinan's Zhangqiu County is one of China's key counties for coal output. Additionally, Jinan’s iron ore reserve totals 49.1 million tons.
Three railways intersect in Jinan, namely, the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Jinan-Qingdao Railway and Jinan-Handan Railway, making this city easily accessible. Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport is located in the northwest of the city, providing more transport options. It is located 28.5 km from Jinan’s downtown area. In 2009, the airport’s passenger and freight throughput reached 5.85 million persons and 56,597 tons, ranking 23rd and 24th in China.
Jinan is Shandong’s education center. It has 36 universities and colleges with a total of 493,600 students – the highest in the province. Shandong University, located in Jinan, is the most famous university in Shandong.
Economic Features
In 2010, value-added industrial output rose 10.7% to RMB 135.2 billion. Jinan has established six pillar industries, including electronics, food processing and pharmaceuticals, machinery, petrochemicals, transportation equipment, and metallurgy. The six industries has value-added industrial output of RMB 100.13 billion, up 14.3% year on year, accounting for 76.3% of the city's total.
China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (CNHDT or Sinotruk) is the largest heavy truck manufacturer in China. Being the birthplace for China's first heavy duty truck, Sinotruk is currently one of the major heavy duty truck production bases in China. In the first half of 2010, the sales revenue of the company reached RMB 16.56 billion up 51.33% year on year, while the net profit amounted to RMB 552 million, up 160.23% year on year.
Modern service industry is a rapid growing industry in the city. In 2010, added value of modern service industry amounted to RMB 91.81 billion, up 12.5% year on year, accounting for 44.6% of the tertiary industry.
Jinan is the headquarters of Inspur Group, one of the earliest enterprises engaged in China's IT industry. Inspur is also the largest player in the city's electronics and IT industry. It has set up joint ventures with Casio, Ericsson and LG in several other cities. Currently, Inspur is one of the top five outsourcing companies in China, and one of the top 100 outsourcing companies in the world. In 2009, its revenue reached RMB 27.2 billion, up 17% year on year.
Within the same year, Jinan's foreign trade increased 31% to US$7.41 billion, of which exports amounted to US$4.05 billion, up 33.1% year on year. The main exports were mechanical and electronic products, which amounted to US$2.53 billion, increased 30%. Utilized FDI reached US$1.04 billion, up 6.1% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Jinan was established and received its name during the early Han Dynasty about 2,200 years ago. Many of the nation’s famous poets throughout history lived in Jinan, such as Xin Qiji and Li Qingzhao in the Song Dynasty. In 1897, Germany occupied Jinan and used it as a base for its colonial expansion in China. The Qingdao-Jinan Railway was built at that time.
Jinan is nicknamed "City of Springs". The history of its springs dates back to 694 BC, when lords from two states held a meeting by Luoshui (currently known as the Baotu Spring – the most famous spring in Jinan). Presently, there are 139 springs in Jinan. Most of them are sources of drinkable mineral water.
Tourist Attraction
Marco Polo once paid a visit to Jinan. It is a hospitable city and attracts tourists from all over the world with its famous scenic spots like the Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, Thousand Buddha Mountain, the ancient Great Wall of the Qi State (a state of the Zhou Dynasty between 770-221 BC), and the colored sculptures of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) in the Lingyan Temple.
Jinan Cuisine features delicate aromas, wonderful taste, tenderness and a wide variety of dishes. While Shandong Cuisine is famous for its soup, Jinan’s is the best, with the most renowned being Pucai in Milky Soup (Naitang Pucai).
