Introduction
 

Located at the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, Weihai faces the Korean Peninsular and various Japanese chain islands across the sea. It is a prefecture-level city of Shandong Province, covering a total area of 5,436 sq km, with an urban area of 769 sq km.

Surrounded by sea on three sides, Weihai is connected by two highways to Yantai, which is 60 km westwards from the city, and Qingdao, which is 200 km southwest. There is also a railway line which runs to Weihai, connecting it with Shandong Province’s major cities, such as Qingdao, Weifang, Zibo and Jinan.

Weihai has a temperate monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 11.9℃ and an annual rainfall of 730 mm.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, GDP of the city rose 12.7% to RMB 194.47 billion. The agricultural, industry, and service sector contributed RMB 15.39 billion, RMB 108.7 billion and 70.37 billion, accounting for 7.92%, 55.89% and 36.19% respectively.

In 2010, the value-added industrial output of enterprises above designated size in Weihai increased 10.5% year on year. The heavy industry increased 9.7%, while light industry increased 11.7%. Its pillar industries are the light and textile industry, machinery, electronics and petrochemicals.

In 2010, the city has invested more funds in high-tech industry and modern manufacturing industry. The total amount invested in high-tech industry rose 11.8% to RMB 14.3 billion.

Real estate investment rose 28.8% to RMB 26.98 billion, of which RMB 23.69 billion was invested in residential projects and RMB 1.61 billion in commercial projects.

Weihai is a major city for tourism in China. In 2010, revenue from the tourism sector reached RMB 22 billion, up 16.7% year on year. Over 21.49 million tourists have been to Weihai, of which, 372,600 were foreigners.

In 2010, the foreign trade value of Weihai up 31.2% to US$13.92 billion, of which, exports accounted for US$8.92 billion and import amounted to US$4.99 billion. Machinery is the main export product with export value of US$4.47 billion, accounting for 50.2% of the total export. Korea, E.U., U.S., Japan were major export market, with the export value of US$2.84 billion, US$1.62 billion, US$1.14 billion, US$1.08 billion, respectively. In 2010, the city has approved 136 foreign invested projects with the total utilized FDI of US$555 million.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

The city of Weihai was built in 1398 – an era which saw the nation's coastal area frequently attacked by the Japanese. It was named "Weihaiwei", which means “stronghold by the coast” - an indication of the city’s military history.

The National Weihai Seafood Festival, held annually in May, involves dozens of restaurants cooperating with each other to cook specialized seafood dishes for tourists. In addition, there are also many domestic and international fishing festivals and competitions in Weihai which are usually held in October.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Weihai is an ideal place to visit at any time of the year as it does not have very cold winters or intense summer heat. Famous tourist attractions include Liugong Island, Chengshantou, Weihai International Bathing Beach, Fahua Temple at Chishan Mountain, and Swan Lake.

Weihai cuisine is derived from Shandong Cuisine, which involves fastidious knife work, as well as careful calculation of the duration and degree of cooking and flavoring. Favorite local dishes include roasted trepang, shrimp, dried scallop, roasted conch, fried swan egg, crab cooked with ginger soup, steamed Jiaji fish, and Weihai consommé.
