Yangzhou is situated at the confluence of Yangtze River and the Grand Canal. It is famous for its many well-preserved Suzhou-style gardens. Lying in the center of Jiangsu Province, it borders the provincial capital of Nanjing to the southwest, Yancheng to the northeast, Taizhou to the east, and across the river to Zhenjiang in the south.
With the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway and the Nanjing-Nantong Expressway intersecting at Yangzhou, it takes only one hour to travel to Nanjing, two hours to Shanghai and eight hours to Beijing. The Yangzhou Railway Station offers direct routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzou, Wuhan and Xi’an. Though an airport is not yet constructed in Yangzhou, the Nanjing Lukou International Airport and the Shanghai Pudong International Airport are both within two hours’ drive.
Economic Features
In 2010, Yangzhou reported GDP of RMB 220.79 billion, up 13.4% year-on-year. It is the 7th largest economy in the Jiangsu Province. As a traditional industrial base in Jiangsu, the added value from the second industry rose 14.6% year-on-year to RMB 122.93 billion, accounting for 55.7% of the city's GDP.
Machinery, transportation equipment manufacturing, chemicals are major industries of the city, with industrial output of RMB 98.12 billion, RMB 80.13 billion and RMB73.22 billion, up 38.1%, 46.8% and 35% year on year respectively.
Yangzhou is an important petrochemicals base in Jiangsu. The Yangzhou Chemical Industrial Park, close to Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park and Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park (the largest chemical industrial park in Asia) , has attracted companies such as PetroChina, Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fiber Co. Ltd, Toray Industries, Daren Chemicals, etc. The Yangzhou Yangtze River Petrochemical Market is located in the park.
The foreign-trade value in Yangzhou increased by 51.7% year-on-year to US$8.24 billion in 2010. The export value was US$6.05 billion, up 50.9% year-on-year. Major foreign-trade partners include E.U. (US$1.4 billion), the U.S. (US$ 965 million),The mainstream exported products are shipyard, textile and garments, chemicals, shoes, LCD etc.
The utilized FDI rose 13.5% to US$2.57 billion.
Cultural Highlights
Yangzhou is a renowned historical and cultural city in China. A very famous song in Chinese culture, “Jasmine Flower”, originated from the city. The history of Yangzhou can be traced back to 2,500 years ago, when it was called Guangling in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-403BC); the city received its current name in 590AD. During the Sui Dynasty (581-617AD), it was the Southern Capital of China, and was named “Jiangdu” after the completion of the Grand Canal. Later, it became the capital of Wu Kingdom during the Five Dynasties and the Kingdom Period (907-960AD). The famous Italian traveler, Marco Polo, was once a governor of Yangzhou in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368AD).
Tourist Attraction
The top tourist sights in Yangzhou include Slender Western Lake and old residences, such as the Wang Residence, the Gaoming Temple and the Daming Temple. Slender West Lake, named after the West Lake in Hangzhou, is a narrow stretch of water flowing through Yangzhou. Daming Temple, located in the northern suburb of Yangzhou, has a history stretching back over fifteen-hundred years and has many cultural relics and temples, and a lot of garden scenery. Other popular attractions include the Flat Hills Hall, the Pavilion of Flourishing Culture (Wenchang Ge), the Stone Pagoda, the Tomb of Puhaddin, Yechun Garden and Ge Garden. Sampling the local cuisine is an excellent reason for travelers to visit Yangzhou; Lion’s Head (meatball flavored with crab roe) and Ji Huo Gan Si (dried bean-curd shreds with chicken and ham slices) are the most well-known cuisines.
