Introduction
 

Zhenjiang lies in the southwest of Jiangsu province. It is situated at the intersection point of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal (the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal), the longest man-made canal in the world. It lies to the east of Nanjing, west of Shanghai and Nantong.

It serves as an important transportation hub in the Yangtze River Delta. Zhenjiang Port, one of the 5 major ports in Jiangsu (the other four are Nanjing Port, Suzhou Port, Nantong Port and Lianyungang Port), is an important transfer port for goods from the upper and middle parts of the Yangtze River. It is 90 km away from Nanjing Lukou Airport and 60 km from Changzhou Luosuye Airport. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, No. 312 State Highway and No. 104 State Highway go through the city. The Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway, scheduled for construction in 2008, will cut the driving time from Zhenjiang to Shanghai to 1 hour.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2009, GDP of Zhenjiang grew 13.7% from the previous year to RMB 167.2 billion, ranking ninth among all the cities in Jiangsu. The second and third industry are main contributors, which have value added output of RMB 97.2 billion and RMB 62.4 billion, accounting for 58.1% and 37.3% of the city’s GDP, respectively.

The private economy is very active in the city, with the total added-value of RMB93 billion, up 14.2% year on year, accounting for 55.6% of the city’s GDP. By the end of 2009, the city has 28,929 private enterprises with total registered capital of RMB 61.65 billion.

The value-added industrial output from enterprises with the designated size and above amounted to RMB 79 billion, 75% of which was generated by heavy industries. The major industries in the city include paper making, new materials, special metal, chemicals, and equipment manufacturing. The total sales revenue of the pillar industries amounted to RMB 249.8 billion, up 14.8% year on year, accounting for 83.2% of the city’s total. The large companies there include Sopo Corp, Feida Group, Tiangong Tools, and Chia Hsin Jingyang Cement.

The foreign trade value in 2009 in Zhenjiang amounted to US$6.04 billion, with export decreasing of 16.7% year-on-year to US$3.54 billion. The main export destinations are the Asia (US$1.61 billion), Europe (US$751 million), and North America (US$ 745 million). The main export products included machinery (US$1.34 billion), paper products (US$739 million), and metal products (US$473 million).

It attracted FDI of US$2.8 billion in 2009, up 20.2% year-on-year, and the utilized FDI increased by 19.9% year-on-year to US$1.44 billion. The state-level and province-level developments have generated US$1.09 billion utilized FDI, up 30.4% year on year, accounting for 76.1% of the city’s total.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zhenjiang’s history can be traced back to the eighth century BC, when it was a feudal domain. Qin Shi Huang, the first Chinese emperor, conquered it in 221 BC. During the Sui Dynasty, it served as a garrison to guard the entrance to the Yangtze River. The local people in Zhenjiang speak a dialect of the lower Yangtze River Mandarin which is on the linguistic border with the Wu language.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Zhenjiang is blessed with charming scenery and cultural relics. The 3 famous hills in Zhenjiang,  Jiaoshan Hill, Beigushan Hill and Jinshan Hill, were regarded by ancient poets as the most attractive sites in the southern area of the Yangtze River. The 1,400-year Dinghui Temple is located in Jiaoshan and the 1,500-year Jinshan Temple is in Jinshan Hill Park. Traditional items in Zhenjiang cuisine include crab cream bun, fragrant black vinegar and pickles.
