Cultural Highlights

Nanjing is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Its history can be traced back 35,000 years to the time of the Nanjing ape man. In 472 BC, Yuecheng, the first recorded military fortress, was built there. Later, during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280), Sun Quan moved the capital of his kingdom to Jianye – now known as Nanjing.

After that, Nanjing served as the capital for several dynasties. In 1356, the Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) changed Jianye to Yingtian Fu. It was renamed Nanjing in 1368 and made the capital of Ming in 1378. After the 1911 Revolution, Chiang Kaishek set up his power base in Nanjing. In 1937, the inhuman Nanjing Massacre took place there.
