Linyi sits in the southern part of Shandong Province. It adjoins Rizhao to the east, Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province to the south, Zaozhuang, Jining and Tai'an to the west, and Zibo and Weifang to the north. Covering an area of 17,184 sq km, the city is the largest city in Shandong. With a population of 10.2 million, it is also the most populous city in the province.
Linyi has well-established transportation infrastructure. Linyi Airport, which is a thirty-minute drive from the downtown area, offers regular flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, Weihai and other 5 cities in mainland China. The Yunzhou-Shijiu Railway, the Pingshang-Lanshan Railway, the Beijing-Shanghai Highway and the Rizhao-Dongming Highway all run through the city.
Linyi is rich in mineral resources. Over 45 kinds of mineral reserves have been found in the city’s lands, including iron, titanium, copper, gold, silver and aluminum. The temperate continental climate and the fertile land make Linyi an agricultural base for wheat, peanuts, corn, cotton and soybeans.
Economic Features
In 2010, GDP of Linyi grew 12.9% from a year earlier to RMB 240 billion, ranking seventh in Shandong. The value-added output from secondary industry in Linyi rose 13% year on year to RMB 120.6 billion, comprising 50.3% of the city's GDP.
Food processing, machinery, construction materials, wood processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles and garments, and metallurgy constitute the major industries in the city. The value-added industrial output from the eight major industries soared 16.9% year on year to RMB 85.15 billion, making up 78% of the city's total.
Lunan Pharmaceuticals Group, Huasheng Jiangquan Group, Linyi Mining Group, Chalco Huayu Aluminum & Power and Shandong New Yizhou Cement are the leading enterprises in Linyi. Lunan Pharmaceuticals Group, set up in 1987, specializes in the production of both traditional medicines, and chemical and bio-pharmaceutical products. It is comprises seven subsidiaries, including Lunan Hope Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, Lunan Better Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, and Shandong New Time Pharmaceutical Co Ltd. In 2009, the sales revenue of the group amounted to RMB 2.64 billion and net profits reached RMB 510 million.
Huasheng Jiangquan Group has total assets of RMB 7.8 billion by the end of 2009. Its major products include Jiang Quan Tian Di steel and steel products, cements, construction ceramics, aluminum and wooden products. In 2009, its sales revenue hit RMB 17.26 billion, and foreign trade value amounted to US$324 million. In 2009, the company ranked 338th among the top 500 Enterprises in China.
In 2010, the total foreign trade value in the city increased 39.4% to US$4.77 billion. The export value amounted to US$2.83 billion, up 29.2% year on year. Wooden products, art and crafts, textiles and garments, ceramics, construction materials, and agricultural products are Linyi's major export products.
In 2010, the city has approved 37 foreign investment projects, the utilized FDI in the city exceeded US$327 million, up 7% year on year. By the end of 2009, the city has 22 listed companies, of which 18 enterprises are listed overseas.
Cultural Highlights
Linyi enjoys a long history. During the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), Linyi belonged to Langya County and Tan County. Since then, it has been under the administration of different counties and states. The bamboo strips of "the Art of War of Sunzi" and "the Art of War of Sun Bin" were found in a western Han tomb in the city. "The Art of War of Sunzi", written by Sun Zi in the Warring States Period (403 BC-221 BC), is the most influential ancient Chinese military book ever written. Sun Bin, a direct descendant of Sun Zi, wrote the "the Art of War of Sun Bin". Both books discuss military treaties, tactics and strategies.
Tourist Attraction
Linyi is rich in tourism resources. The most popular attractions in Linyi are the Museum of Bamboo Strips of Han Dynasty Tomb, Shandong Underground Grand Canyon, Wolong Mountain Buddhist Patriarch Cave, Mengshan National Forest Park, and Yishui Snowy Mountain Tourist Resort. The Museum of Bamboo Strips of Han Dynasty was built in 1989. The tombs of Han Dynasty were discovered in 1972. The bamboo strips of "the Art of War of Sunzi" and "the Art of War of Sun Bin" were found in the tombs. In the tombs, silk paintings of the western Han Dynasty were also unearthed. The Grand Canyon is about 6,100 meters. The Grand Canyon resort consists of one river, five passes, six waterfalls, nine springs, nine palaces and twelve gorges. The Buddhist Patriarch Cave is a natural cave formed several million years ago. There are numerous caves nearby.
The local dishes, which are fresh and delicate, are also attractive. The most recommendable local foods there include Fried and Stewed Catfish with Tulip Wine, Junan Donkey Meat, Salty Beans Porridge, Wang Xiang Wo Yo (a kind of fried red carp) and Jinmeng Rabbit Meat.
