Lying on the lower reaches of the Yellow River, Liaocheng is seated in the western part of Shandong Province. It neighbors the provincial capital Jinan to the southeast, Dezhou to the northeast, Tai'an to the south and Hebei Province and Henan Province to the west. Liaocheng is dotted by lakes and is known as "the water city" in China. The Grand Canal goes through the city.
Due to its geographic location at the meeting point of Shandong Province, Hebei Province and Henan Province, Liaocheng serves as an important transportation hub. The Jinan-Liaocheng Highway is connected with the Jinan-Qingdao Highway, cutting the drive time from Liaocheng to Jinan Airport and Qingdao Port to 1 hour and 4 hours, respectively. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway and the Handan-Jinan Railway run through the city, linking Liaocheng with the cities along the two railways.
Liaocheng is rich in coal, oil, natural gas, mineral water and limestone. It enjoys a semi-moist continental climate with four distinct seasons and enough sunshine.
Economic Features
In 2010, the city's GDP grew 13.1% year on year to RMB 160.65 billion. Secondary industry, which contributed 58.2% to the city's GDP, remains the major contributor the city's economy.
The value-added output from the industrial sector rose 18.1% to RMB 107.22 billion. The industrial value-added output from heavy industry edged up 20.7% to RMB 67.45 billion, making up 62.9% of the city's total industrial value-added output, while that from light industry rose 13.9% to RMB 39.77 billion, making up 37.1% of the city's total.
Industrial output from high-tech industry amounted to RMB 119.1 billion, up 14.9% year on year, accounting for 28.59% of the industrial sector.
The city's major industries are glass products manufacturing, petrochemicals, salt chemicals, plastic products manufacturing and textiles. Shifeng Group, Shandong Xinfa Group and Shandong Tralin Paper are the leading firms in city. Xinfa Group, set up in 1994, is a private firm with a focus on the manufacture of auto parts. Its business also covers equipment manufacturing, electronics, food processing and trade.
Shifeng Group was set up in 1993 in Gaotang County of Liaocheng. Major products of the group include tractors, engines, tires, light trucks and harvesters. During the period from 2003 to 2006, the group invested a total of RMB 2 billion in building the Shifeng Juxing Tire Industrial Park. In 2009, the sales revenue of the group amounted to RMB 21.1 billion, up 15.3% year on year, with the profit of RMB 890 million, up 10.6% than that of 2008. The group has produced 1.24 million vehicles, 1.28 million engines and 3 million tires.
The city's total foreign trade value amounted to US$3.63 billion, reflecting an increase of 52.2% year on year. The export value increased 54.2% year on year to US$1.29 billion. In 2010, the utilized FDI in the city amounted to US$101 million. Large multinational firms, such as DSM from the Netherlands and Itochu from Japan, have made investments in the city.
Cultural Highlights
Liaocheng's history dates back to about 3,000 BC to about 2,000 BC during the Neolithic Age. Archeologists have found relics of Longshan Cultural Town in the Liaocheng area. During the Spring-and-Autumn Period (770BC-403BC), Liaocheng was an important political and cultural center of Qi State. During the Han Dynasty, Liaocheng belonged to Yunzhou. The construction of the Grand Canal during the Sui and Tang Dynasties (AD581-AD907) boosted the city's economic growth. During AD1289-AD1415, Liaocheng became a commercial city along the Grand Canal. In 1997, Liaocheng became a prefecture-level city of Shandong Province.
Tourist Attraction
Liaocheng has plentiful cultural, historical and natural scenery sites, such as Dongchang Lake Scenic Spot, Guangyue Pavillion, Shanxi and Shaanxi Complex, China Canal Culture Museum, Jiangdi Entertainment Park, Jingyang Ridge Tourist Resort and the Lion Tower. Dongchang Lake Scenic Spot is located southwest of Liaocheng, with the Grand Canal running across it. Dongchang Lake was built along the old city moat in AD1070. The center of the scenic spot is the old town of Liaocheng, which has a history of over 1,000 years. Shanxi and Shaanxi Mansion was built by merchants from Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province during the Qing Dynasty. The complex consists of the passage building, opera tower, bell tower, drum tower, pavilions and palaces.
The local dishes in Liaocheng belong to Shandong Cuisine. Popular dishes in the city include eight pieces cookie (a kind of fried snack separated into eight oval pieces), Jellied Bean-curd, Jimei Pickles, Luohan Cake (also known as pyramid cake), Linqing Chicken Sack (stewed chicken stuffed with diverse ingredients) and Laowangzhai Donkey Meat.
