Introduction
 

Zaozhuang is a prefecture-level city lying in the southern part of Shandong Province. Situated at the intersection of Shandong and Jiangsu Province, it borders Linyi, Shandong to the east, Pizhou, Jiangsu to the south, Jining, Shandong to the west and Zoucheng, Shandong to the north. It covers an area of 4,563 sq km.

Zaozhuang has convenient transportation. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway, the Beijing-Fuzhou Railway and the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway traverse across the city, as does the Grand Canal. The city is located 200 km from Jinan Airport in Shandong Province and 60 km from Xuzhou Airport in Jiangsu Province, both of which offer daily flights to major cities throughout China. Qingdao Port, Rizhao Port and Lianyugang Port are within 5 hours’ drive from Zaozhuang.

The city enjoys a temperate monsoon climate, with four mild, distinct seasons. The average temperature in Zaozhuang is about 15°C.

 
Economic Features
 
Zaozhuang's economy is relatively small in Shandong Province. The GDP of Zaozhuang rose 12.6% from a year earlier to RMB 136.2 billion in 2010. Agricultural, industry and service sector have contributed RMB 11.76 billion, RMB 81.84 billion and RMB 42.61 billion, accounting for 8.6%, 60.1% and 31.3% respectively. The private sector contributed greatly to the city's economic growth, with value-added output of RMB 76.24 billion in 2010, contributed 55.97% to Zaozhuang's GDP.

The industrial value-added output from the industrial sector in Zaozhuang grew 12.2% year on year to RMB 82.48 billion. Heavy industry and light industry generated RMB 60.78 billion and RMB 21.69 billion in industrial value-added output, respectively, accounting for 73.6% and 26.4% of that of the city respectively.

Non-metallic mineral products, chemical products, garments manufacturing, food manufacturing are four pillar industries in the city, with combined value-added industrial output of RMB 19.46 billion, up 15.2% year on year, accounting for 23.6% of the total. High-tech industry grew rapidly in 2010. The value-added industrial output of high-tech industry amounted to RMB 66.52 billion, up 24.3% year on year, accounting for 21.2% of the city's total.

Zaozhuang Coal Mining Group, Yikang Group and Dihao Liqor-making Group are the major enterprises in the city. Zaozhuang Coal Mining Group, originating from Zhongxing Mining, was set up in 1956. Its businesses cover coal mining and production, machinery, chemicals, electricity and construction materials. With 1.42 million in recoverable coal reserves, the group is one of top coal producers in Shandong Province. In 2009, sales revenue of the group amounted to RMB 29.6 billion, ranking 16th among all coal mining enterprises in China.

Yikang Group, a large private firm in Zaozhuang, was set up in 1983 and specializes in food production, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products processing. Its assets amounted to RMB 220 million and the sales revenue surpassed RMB 802 million in 2009.

Zaozhuang witnessed a rapid growth in foreign trade in 2010. The total foreign trade value in the city increased 53.2% year on year to US$911 million, of which export amounted to US$746 million. The city contributed less than one percent to Shandong's total foreign trade value. In 2010, the city has approved 36 foreign invested projects with the total utilized FDI of US$239 million.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zaozhuang enjoys a long history. During the Xia Dynasty (2100 BC-1600 BC), the city belonged to different states. In 254 BC, during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 BC-221 BC), the whole territory of present-day Zaozhuang was under the administration of Chu State. During the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC) and the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 189), Zaozhuang was divided into different parts belonging to different states. Then in the Three Kingdoms Period (AD 180-AD 280), the whole region of Zaozhuang fell into the jurisdiction of Wei State. Since AD550, during the Southern Dynasty (AD 420-589), Zaozhuang was divided into two parts in the north and south, which were finally named Tengxian and Fengxian. In 1960, Fengxian was changed into Zaozhuang City. Zaozhuang is the home town of Mozi, a famous Chinese philosopher in the Warring States Period (476 BC-221 BC). He founded the school of Mohism. Zaozhuang was also a revolutionary base for the railway guerillas during the Chinese Anti-Japanese War.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Zaozhuang has abundant tourism resources. The relics of Xue State and Teng State, Wanmu Megranates Orchard, Mozi Memorial Hall, Tai’erzhuang Battle Site, the Railway Guerilla Memorial Garden, Xiong’er Mountain National Geologic Park and Baodugu National Forest Park are worth visiting. The relics of Xue State and Teng States are situated in Tengzhou City, a county-level city under Zaozhuang. The old town of Xue State is one of the best preserved ancient towns in China. Wanmu Megranates Orchard, the largest megranates orchard, is located in the Yicheng District. Tai’erzhuang Battle Site was founded in memory of the Tai’erzhuang Battle in 1938. Films, photos and other documentation of the battle are displayed in the memorial hall. Red dates and megranates are most popular local products in Zaozhuang.

The local cuisine in Zaozhuang belongs to Shandong Cuisine. Yimengshan Mutton Soup, Vegetable Pancake, Spicy Chicken, Kua Bao Huo Shao (a kind of baked square pancake) and Nanyang Duck are the most popular local dishes in Zaozhuang.
