Introduction
 
Zibo, lying at the intersection of the Luzhong mountainous region and the Lubei plain, is seated in central Shandong Province. The city is adjacent to Weifang to the east, Linyi to the south, Laiwu and Tai’an to the southwest, the provincial capital Jinan to the west, Dongying to the northeast, and Binzhou to the north.

The Jinan-Qingdao Railway, the Binzhou-Laiwu Highway, State Highway 205 and State Highway 309 go through the city, connecting the city with other major cities in Shandong. Zibo’s downtown is only 70 km from Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport. Qingdao Port, the fifth largest port by cargo throughput in China in 2009, is 300 km from Zibo. In 2009, Qingdao Port handled 315 million tons of cargo and 10.26 TEUs.

Zibo is rich in mineral resources such as iron, fireclay, coal and bauxite. Jinling and Heiwang are the two major iron ore reserves in Zibo, and have proven iron ore reserves of 140 million and 39.6 million tons, respectively.
 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, Zibo's GDP was increased by 13.7% from a year earlier to RMB 286.68 billion. The agricultural, industry and service sector have contributed RMB 10.53 billion, RMB 176.66 and RMB 99.49 billion respectively, accounting for 3.7%, 61.6% and 34.7% of the city's total.
Zibo is a traditional industrial city. The value-added output from the industrial sector rose 16.2% year on year.. Heavy industry and light industry rose 16.1% and 16.6% respectively in 2010. Equipment manufacturing, metallurgy, machinery, construction materials, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and textiles are the major industries in Zibo.

In 2010, value-added industrial output from equipment manufacturing amounted to RMB 33.29 billion, accounting for 18.41% of the manufacturing industry. High-tech industry has seen a rapid growth in 20109, with the gross industrial output of RMB 302.45 billion, accounting for 38.18% of the city's total industrial output.

Leading enterprises in Zibo include Chalco Shandong Company, Sinopec Qilu Company, Jincheng Petrochemicals and Zibo Coal. Chalco Shandong Company is a subsidiary under China's largest aluminum producer, Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco). Established in 1954, Chalco Shandong Company was the first aluminum producing base in China. It has an annual aluminum production capacity of 2 million tons.

Sinopec Qilu Company is a unit under China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), the oil giant in China. It was formed in 1966, and its products range from refined oil, synthetic rubber, and fertilizer, to ethylene and fiber. It is capable of refining over 10 million tons of oil per year. Sinope Qilu can produce 0.8 million tons of ethylene and 1.1 million tons of rubber annually.

The foreign trade value amounted to US$6.72 billion, increased by 39.1% year on year. The export value reached US$4.03 billion, up 31.6% year on year. The U.S. is still the largest export destination, which accounting for 20.0% of the city's total export. Export value to E.U ranked the second, accounting for 17.3% of the city's total.

In 2010, the city has approved 29 foreign invested enterprises to set up their companies in the city, with the utilized FDI gained 15.7% year on year to end at US$448 million. U.S.-based PPG, Japan-based Ebara, and the Italian IMA Group, along with other large multinational companies, have made investments in Zibo.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zibo has a long history. In ancient times, the ancient Yiyuan people lived in this area. In the Spring-and-Autumn and the Warring States Periods (770BC-221BC), Zibo was the capital city of the State of Qi. Therefore, Zibo is also known as the origin place for Qi Culture. As Cuju, the origin of ancient football, also originated in Zibo, the city was entitled the birthplace of football by FIFA in 2004. Zibo has long been an important industrial city. Zibo started coal mining during the Tang Dynasty and witnessed a booming pottery industry during the Song Dynasty.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Zibo enjoys abundant historical and cultural sites of interest. The Linzi Museum of Ancient Chariots, the Museum of the History of the State of Qi, the Zibo City Museum and the Zibo Museum of Ceramics are the most recommendable places for tourists who want to learn about Zibo’s long history and about the Qi Culture. Yuanshan National Forest Park, situated southwest of Baoshan District in Zibo, is a spot worth visiting. It consists of the Great Wall of the Qi State, the grass skiing field, Dinosaur Valley and a folk garden. The Great Wall of the Qi State was built by the Qin State during the Spring-and-Autumn and Warring States Periods over 2,500 years ago.

Zibo cuisine is part of Shandong Cuisine. The local foods, including Zhou Cun Pancake, Shi Ha Ma Dumpling, Vegetable Pancake, Sauced Mutton, and Bean-curd Case (fried bean-curd  stuffed with vegetables and meat), enjoy a good reputation among tourists.
