Taizhou is situated in the coastal area of eastern Zhejiang Province. It borders Wenzhou in the south, Jinhua and Lishui in the west, Ningbo and Shaoxing in the north and the East China Sea in the east. Covering an area of 9,411 sq km, the city governs 3 districts, 2 county-level cities and 4 counties. It enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate.
Taizhou has well-established highway network. The Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Highway, The Shangyu-Sanmen Highway and State Highway 104 run through the city. The Taizhou Luqiao Airport (formerly Huangyan Airport) offers regular flights to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi'an and other domestic cities.
The city is rich in power resources. Taizhou Power Plant is a thermal power plant with installed capacity of over 2 million kilowatts. Jiangxia Tidal Power Plant is the largest tidal power plant in China.
Economic Features
In 2010, the city realized GDP of RMB 241.5 billion in 2010, representing a growth of 13.1% from the previous year. The industry sector contributed 52.3% to the city's GDP.
In 2010, gross industrial output of the city amounted to RMB 378.33 billion, up 35.1% year on year. Heavy industry generated a gross industrial output of RMB 245.96 billion, up 37.7% year on year, while light industry achieved a gross industrial output of RMB 132.37 billion in 2010. Heavy industry and light industry made up 65% and 35% of Taizhou's total gross industrial output, respectively. Transportation equipment manufacturing, machinery, plastic products, metallurgy, and electric power supply and production are the major industries in the city.
Zhejiang Yongtai Technology Co., Ltd. is principally engaged in the research, development, manufacture and distribution of fluoric fine chemical products. The company's major products include chemicals for liquid crystal display (LCD) units, medicine chemicals, agricultural chemicals and other chemicals. The company listed on Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Dec 2009. The sales revenue and net profit of the company amounted to RMB 492 million and RMB 57 million in 2009 respectively.
China New Century Group was set up in 1997 in Taizhou. The group has 16 wholly-owned enterprises, with business covering manufacturing, logistics, foreign trade and business, property development and trust services. In 2009, its sales revenue exceeded RMB 15.8 billion while the net profit amounted to RMB 98 million. The company ranked 366th on the top 500 enterprises in China..
The service sector, the second largest contributor to Taizhou's economy, has value-added output of RMB 99.25 billion in 2010, representing a growth of 12.4% year on year. It contributed 41.1% to the city's GDP. In 2010, more than 32.95 million tourists have visited the city, with the revenue from tourism industry reached RMB27.3 billion, up 18.8% year on year.
The foreign trade value in the city increased 41.3% year on year to US$17 billion. The export value increased 38.7% to US$13.96billion. Suitcases, garments, and mechanical and electronic products are the city's major export products.
Cultural Highlights
As early as in the Neolithic age, people were dwelling in Taizhou. It bore several names in history. During the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), Taizhou was called Puxiang. During the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-22AD), the name was changed to Puxian Shire. During the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), it was named Haizhou State. Taizhou got its present-day name in 622. It became a prefecture-level city in 1994. Wu Culture is prevailing in the region. The local people speak a dialect called “Wu Chinese”.
Tourist Attraction
Taizhou has rich tourism resources. The South China Great Wall, a well-preserved segment of ancient Great Wall in Linhai, is said to be the original version of the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing. The South China Great Wall Tourist Festival is hosted from October to November. Other great scenic spots in Taizhou include Tiantai Mountain Scenic Spot, Xianju National Scenic Area, Taozhu Provincical Area, Changyu Dongtai Scenic Area, and Dalu Island. The best time to visit Taizhou is between April and October, when it is neither too cold nor hot. Local dishes such as Handmade Noodles, Ginger Nut Eggs, Lin Hai Mai Xia (with a dish made from wheat, eggs, beef and seafood) and Water Rice Cake (a rice pastry preserved in water), are very popular among the tourists.
