Introduction
 

Dezhou, lying in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, is situated in the northwestern part of Shandong Province. It borders Hebei Province to the north, Jinan, the provincial capital of Shandong Province, to the southeast, and Shengli Oilfield to the east.  The city has an ideal geographic location, as Shengli Oilfield is one of the top oilfields in China.

Situated at the intersection of Shandong Province, and Hebei Province, Dezhou is an important transportation hub in north China. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway, the Dezhou-Shijiazhuang Railway and the Jinan-Handan Railway join in Dezhou, while the Beijing-Fuzhou Highway and the Jinan-Liaocheng Highway go through the city. Jinan Airport is within 1-hour drive from Dezhou. Tianjin Port, the third largest port in China in terms of cargo traffic in 2009, is merely two hours' drive from the city.

Located in the temperate semi-humid monsoon climatic region, Dezhou is hot in summer and chilly in winter. The average temperature is about 12.3°C.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, GDP of Dezhou rose 12.9% year on year to RMB 165.78 billion. The city is largely supported by secondary industry, which generated value-added output of RMB 89.95 billion, comprising 54.3% of Dezhou's GDP. The service industry has increased rapidly in recent years. In 2010, value added output from service industry increased 13.8% to RMB 54.77 billion.

The value-added industrial output from the enterprises with designated size and above grew 16% year on year to RMB 102.31 billion. The light industry and heavy industry amounted to RMB 49.22 billion and RMB 53.09 billion, accounting for 13.13% and 18.81% of the city's total. Central air-conditioning systems, sugar manufacturing, solar energy production and supply, and auto and auto parts are the major industries in Dezhou.

Dezhou has become the production hub of central air-conditioning systems. Major central air-conditioning systems producers in the city include Shandong Grad Group, Dezhou Yatai Group and Midsouth Group.

Shandong Grad Group, headquartered in Dezhou, covers an area of 450,000 square meters. Its major products are central air-conditioning systems, winding pipelines, storage jar systems and other compound material systems.

The city's foreign trade value increased by 35.5% year on year to US$1.95 billion, comprising 1.34 billion in export value and 610 million in import value. Investors from over 30 countries and regions have invested in Dezhou. The utilized FDI in the city amounted to US$130 million in 2010. The foreign direct investments mainly go into the electronic information, bio-technology, new materials and precision machinery industries.
 
Cultural Highlights
 
 

Dezhou's history extends back to the Old Stone Age. Dezhou's pottery discoveries belong to the Longshan Culture that was dominant about 6,000 years ago. Sultan Paduka Pahala of Sulu was the first monarch of the Philippines to visit China, and died in Dezhou on his return journey from a visit to the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The descendants of the sultan still inhabit this region and are classified as part of the Hui minority.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

The most famous attraction in Dezhou is the well-preserved tomb of Sultan Paduka Pahala of Sulu. Other historical sites in the city include Leling Wen Temple (Le Ling Wen Miao), Golden Lotus Park, Changhe Park, Dayan Island Tourism Resort and Dongfang Yu Park. Leling Wen Temple, 120 km from Dezhou’s downtown, was built in AD 1369 during Ming Dynasty. It was reconstructed several times during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The sculpture of "five dragons playing with a ball" is on the main building of the temple.

Dezhou is well known for the Dezhou Braised Chicken (Dezhou Pa Ji), which is a traditional snack in Dezhou. Ever since the reign of Guangxu, an emperor during the Qing Dynasty, the Dezhou Deshun Restaurant has prepared this dish, made of chicken that is fried and then cook it with mushrooms, soy sauce, and sugar.
