Heze, a prefecture-level city in the southwestern part of Shandong Province, is at the intersection of Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces. It is adjacent to Jining in Shandong Province to the east, Anhui Province and Jiangsu Province to the southeast, Henan Province to the west. Heze has a temperate continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers. The average temperature is about 12-13 °C.
The city is an important railway transportation hub in China. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway and the New Asia-Europe Land Bridge meet in the city. State Highway 105, State Highway 106, State Highway 220 and State Highway 327 run through the city. Jinan Airport, Zhengzhou Airport and Jiaxiang Airport are situated 220 km, 230 km and 75 km from Heze, respectively.
Heze has rich coal, oil and natural gas resources. Heze is a large coal and oil base in north China and has proven reserves of 56.3 million tons of oil and 27.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Heze’s Juye Coal Field, has 28.1 billion tons of coal reserves. Heze also has abundant wood resources.
Economic Features
Heze is the fourth smallest economy in Shandong Province by GDP in 2009. In 2010, the city's GDP grew 14.3% year on year to RMB 115.16 billion.
The city is a traditional agricultural base in Shandong Province. The value-added output from the agricultural sector rose 3.2% year on year to RMB 22.02 billion, contributing 19.1% to the city's economy. The city produced 5.65 million tons of crops in 2010, up 1% year on year.
Secondary industry, as the largest contributor to the city's economy, made up 51.7% of the city's GDP in 2010, with value-added output of RMB 59.51 billion. Value-added industrial output amounted to RMB 49.96 billion, up 17.8% year on year. Electricity production and supply, equipment manufacturing, raw chemicals and chemical products, petrochemicals, agricultural products processing, coal mining and supply, textiles, and wooden products manufacturing are the major industries in Heze.
The major players in the city's industrial sector include Shandong Dongming Petrochemicals Group, Shandong Yuhuang Chemicals, Shandong Hongye Chemicals Group, Shandong Caopu Handcrafts and Shandong Yinxiang Weiye Group.
Shandong Dongming Petrochemicals Group, set up in 1987, is the largest independent oil refinery in Shandong province. The company is specializing in petrochemicals manufacturing, pesticides and herbicides, refined chemicals and construction materials. It has an annual production capacity of 6 million tons of chemicals and petrochemicals. In June 2010, PetroChina, China's largest oil and gas producer, has agreed to provide crude oil supply to the company. PetroChina plans to invest to construct a 5-mil-mt/yr crude distillate unit and affiliated deep processing units for Shandong Dongming Petrochemical
The service sector experienced fast growth in 2010. The value-added output from the service sector grew 17.4% year on year to RMB 33.63 billion in 2010, constituting 29.2% of the city's GDP.
The city's foreign trade value soared 44.2% year on year to US$1.815 million in 2010. Exports gained 39.2% year on year to reach US$1.21 billion. In 2010, a total of 34 foreign-funded projects were approved, with total contractual foreign investments falling 89.6% year on year to US$400.76 million. The utilized FDI in the city hit US$118.58 million in 2010, up 39.2% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Heze was an important political, cultural and economic hub in Central China in ancient times, due to its geographic location and vast fertile land. Heze is a shortening of “Heshan” and “Leize”. Abundant relics of the Rao, the Shun and the Yu tribes from the Neolithic Period were discovered in this area. Since the Shang Dynasty, it had been governed by several states. In 1949, Heze belonged to Pingyuan Province. The city is known as the “home of Chinese Opera” in mainland China. It is the origin place for Shandong Bang Zi, a traditional folk art prevailing in Shandong Province, Liu Zi Opera, Da Ping Melody, Da Xian Zi Opera, and Zao Bang. It is also called the “home of the dragon”. The earliest articles depicting dragons were found in the old Heze area.
Tourist Attraction
The most popular tourist attraction in Heze is the peony garden. Heze has a long history of planting peonies. The planting area of peonies exceeds 300 hectares. Over 600 kinds of peonies can be found in the peony garden. Heze is also rich in cultural and historical sites, such as Bai Shi Fang (hundred lions archway) and Yongfeng Tower. Bai Shi Fang, also called Zhang Family Monumental Archway, was built in 1778 in memory of Zhang Pu’s wife. Over 100 lions were sculptured on the archway. Yongfeng Tower was constructed during the Tang Dynasty. It is also called Large Buddha Temple, as a big copper Buddha statue was found in the tower.
Heze has plentiful delicious local dishes, such as Caoxian Braised Beef, Huan’an Donkey Meat, Shanxian Lamb, Caozhou Sesame Seed Cake, Sazi (a kind of crispy snack made of water and flour) and Shujian Dumpling.
