Introduction
 

Yancheng ("salt city" in Chinese) derived its name from the rich sea salt harvest fields around the territory. It is located in the northeastern part of Jiangsu Province. With the largest land area in Jiangsu, the city is adjacent Lianyungang to the northwest, Huai'an to the west, Yangzhou and Taizhou to the southwest, Nantong to the south, and the Yellow Sea to the east.

Yancheng has convenient transportation. Yancheng Train Station, which opened in 2006, offers daily trains to Beijing. The Nanjingyan Expressway and the Coastal Expressway have stops in Yancheng, connecting the city with Shanghai. Yancheng Port, consisting of Chenjiagang Port, Haibin Port, Sheyang Port and Dafeng Port, has annual cargo traffic of over 25 million tons. Yancheng Airport offers flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Wenzhou and Seoul.

Yancheng also has rich oil resources. It has 80 billion cubic meters of proven oil reserves, the most extensive reserves in East China.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, GDP of Yancheng grew 13.6% from the previous year to RMB 226.6 billion, ranking 6th among the cities in Jiangsu Province. The value-added output from the agriculture, industry and service sectors comprised 16%, 48.4% and 35.6% of the city's GDP, respectively.
In 2010, gross industrial output of the city rose 30.2% to RMB 391.98 billion. The value added industrial output by the enterprises with designated size and above increased by 17.3% to RMB 98.55 billion. Among them, value add industrial output of light industry and heavy industry  amounted to RMB 37.99 billion and RMB 60.56 billion, accounting for 13.5% and 19.8% of the total, respectively.

Yancheng Honghua Textile Machinery is the largest textile machinery manufacturer in Yancheng in terms of gross profit in 2009. The firm began as Sheyang No.2 Textile Machinery Plant, which was established in 1986. In 2002, it became Yancheng Honghua Textile Machinery. Major products of this firm include sizing machines, looms, fine combers, size mixers and dyeing machines.

Dongfeng Yueda KIA Passenger Car Co. Ltd is a joint venture of Dongfeng, Jiangsu-based Yue Da and Korea-based KIA. The firm was established with total investments of US$240 million. In 2007, the firm built the second manufacturing line in Yancheng with investments of RMB 6.8 billion. In 2009, the company has sold 230,000 units, up more than 200% year on year.

The foreign trade value in Yancheng amounted to US$3.95 billion in 2010, an increase of 37.6% from the previous year. The export value reached US$2.32 billion, up 24.4% year on year. Mechanical and electrical products and textiles are the major export products. South Korea and the U.S. remain the largest foreign trade partners of Yancheng.

In 2010, the utilized FDI in the city reached US$1.3 billion, up 24.9% than that of 2010, ranking first in the north Jiangsu province. Hyundai and LG from South Korea, Fuji Heavy Industrial Ltd and Sumitomo from Japan and Johnson from the U.S. have set up businesses in Yancheng.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Yancheng's history extends to over 2,100 years ago, when Yandu County, whose name means “salt transportation” in Chinese) was set up 119BC. In AD411, it was called Yancheng, which means “salt city” in Chinese. During the Tang Dynasty (AD618-907), Yancheng became an important salt production base. During the Chinese Civil War, the New Fourth Army led by the Communist Party of China was re-founded in the city. Yancheng is also home to Huai Opera, a type of traditional Chinese opera prevailing in the Huaihe River Region.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Yancheng has plentiful monuments in honor of the New Fourth Army. A large number of statues commemorating the heroes of the New Fourth Army can be found around the city. The city is also rich in scenic spots, such as Yancheng Nature Reserve, Dafeng Milu Nature Reserve and Jiulongkou Nature Reserve. The Yancheng Nature Reserve was set up to protect rare birds, especially the red-crowed crane. Dafeng Milu Nature Reserve is situated in Dafeng City, a county-level city under Yancheng. The reserve is the largest wild breeding base for Milu Deer in the world. A large number of other types of wild animals, such as swans, ern and roe, are living there. The most recommended local foods in the city include Xie Huang Bao (steamed bun with crab yolk), Tang Ma Hua (sweet fried dough twist) and Funing Da Gao (a kind of rice cake).
