Suqian, located in the northern part of Jiangsu Province, neighbors Xuzhou to the northwest, Lianyungang to the northeast, Huai'an to the south, and Anhui Province to the west. It shares China's fourth largest freshwater Lake, Hongze Lake, with Lianyungang. It enjoys a temperate monsoon climate, with distinct four seasons and plentiful rainfall.
The city is a hub for the Beijing-Shanghai Highway, the Nanjing-Suqian-Xuzhou Highway and the Xuzhou-Suqian-Huai'an-Yancheng Highway. The Grand Canal runs through the city, providing convenient water transportation. Xuzhou Guanyin International Airport and Lianyungang Airport are 60 km and 100 km from Suqian. Lianyungang Port, with cargo throughput exceeding 108 million tons in 2009, is within 1.5 hours’ drive from Suqian.
Suqian has rich mineral resources. It has over 500 million tons of quartz sand reserves and clay reserves. The proven reserve of kyanite ranks 1st among the prefecture-level cities in China.
Economic Features
Suqian was the smallest economy in Jiangsu Province in terms of GDP in 2009. The GDP of Suqian grew 13.7% year on year to RMB 101.5 billion. The industry sector, generating RMB 47.9 billion in value-added output in 2010, contributed 47.2% of the city's GDP. The private economy is very active in Suqian, with value-added output from the private sector accounting for nearly two thirds of its economy.
Major industries, consisting of food and beverages, garments and textiles, wood processing, construction materials, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and metallurgy, reached RMB 19.5 billion of industrial value-added output, or 69.2% of the total.
Yanghe Brewery, located in Yanghe Town in Suqian, is a liquor maker. It has a long history dating back to the Qing Dynasty. In 2009, it achieved industrial value-added output of RMB 3.9 billion, accounting for 19.8% of Suqian's total industrial value-added output.
Jiangsu Sijuan Group (SPCC), a leading silk yarn maker in China, was set up in 1923. It has annual silk yarn production capacity of 10 million tons. Annual export value of silk yarn from this company stands at US$20 million.
The foreign trade value in Suqian amounted to US$1.22 billion, including export value of US$914 million and import value of US$306 million. The utilized FDI reached US$185 million in 2010.
Cultural Highlights
Suqian's history can be traced back to the New Stone Age, as the Xiacaowan Cultural Ruin found in Suqian show the activities of the human beings who inhabited the area. Suqian Town was built up in this territory about 2,500 years ago. In 113BC, Ling County was set up in the territory. During the Western Han Dynastry (206BC-24AD), it was replaced by Xiaxiang County. In AD405, Xiaxiang was changed into Suqian County. In 1996, Suqian was promoted to a prefecture-city, governing Shuyang County, Siyang County, Sihong County, Sucheng District and Suyu District.
Tourist Attraction
The most recommendable tourist attractions in Suqian include Luo Ma Lake, Qianlong Temporary Palace and Zhangshan Forest Park. Luo Ma Lake, one of the four largest freshwater lakes in Jiangsu, lies in the northwest of Suqian. It covers an area of 375 km2. Qianlong Temporary Palace, situated in the south bank of the Luo Ma Lake, was first constructed in 1684. The Emperor of Qinlong visited it three times. The best time to tour around Suqian is between May and October, when the weather is pleasant. Crystal hawthorn pastries and Baji peanuts are the most popular snacks in the city.
