Introduction
 

Xuzhou, in the northwest of Jiangsu Province, is located at the intersection point of Shandong Province and Anhui Province. It covers an area of 1,125 sq km and has a population of 8.7 million.

The city has convenient access to transportation. The Beijing-Shanghai Railway intersects with the Longhai Railway (which runs from Lanzhou in Gansu Province to Lianyungang in Jiangsu Province) in Xuzhou. National highways and local expressways link the city with other cities in China. The Grand Canal goes through the city and makes the Xuzhou Port an important energy transfer port. Xuzhou Guanyin Airport offers daily flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other major cities around China.

Xuzhou has plentiful mineral resources, such as coal, iron, titanium and well salt. It also has one of the ten largest coal reserves in China.

 
Economic Features
 
The GDP of Xuzhou rose 13.9% from the previous year to RMB 286.69 billion in 2010, ranking 6th among the cities in Jiangsu. The private economy is active in Xuzhou. The value-added output from the private sector surpassed RMB 186.2 billion, up 19% year on year, comprising 65% of the city's GDP.

The industry sector was the largest contributor, a value-added output accounting for 52% of the city's GDP. Value-added industrial output in Xuzhou from the enterprises with designated size and above soared 17.5% to RMB 138.2 billion in 2010, to which light industry and heavy industry contributed 30% and 70%, respectively.

Xuzhou has chosen equipment manufacturing, energy, and food processing as its major industries.Industrial output from equipment manufacturing industry amounted to RMB 165.67 billion, and from food processing amounted to RMB 129.75 billion.

Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG) is the leading construction machinery producer and supplier in China. XCMG was set up in 1989. Its products include crawler cranes, wheeled loaders, and road surfacing and maintenance machinery. In the first half of 2010, the net profit of the group reached RMB 1.38 billion, while the sales revenue amounted to RMB 13.2 billion.

Xuzhou Mining Group, a top state-owned mining group in Xuzhou, was set up in 1880s. Its business covers coal mining, construction machinery, mining machinery, waterproof materials, cements, etc. With annual coal production capacity of 20 million tons, it is a major coal producer and supplier in East China.

The total foreign trade value in Xuzhou increased 80.9% year on year to RMB 4.16 billion in 2010. Export value up 73.6% year on year to US$2.63 billion. Major export products include construction materials, electronic and mechanical products, base metals and products, and agricultural products. Foreign trade of eight provincial-level industrial parks amounted to US$3.17 billion, of which export amounted to US$1.68 billion, accounting for 76.2% and 64% of the city's total.

In 2010, the utilized FDI in Xuzhou rose 45.2% year on year to US$1.01 billion.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Xuzhou's history can be dated back to 2,600 years ago.. During the Qin and Han Dynasties (221BC-AD24), Xuzhou was called Pengcheng. It is the home town of Liu Bang (Gaozu Emperor), the first emperor of the Han Dynasty. During the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-AD24), Pengzhou became the capital of Western Chu. It had been the capital city for different states during the Eastern Han Dynasties (AD25-198) and the Three Kingdoms Period (AD190-280). During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Pengzhou was renamed Xuzhou. Due to its important geographic location, the area became the battlefield of the Huaihai Campaign in 1948-1949 during the Chinese Civil War.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Tourists visiting Xuzhou will want to see the "Handai San Jue", the three most important and symbolic treasures that represent Han culture. These are the Han tombs, the terracotta warriors and the Han stone sculptures. Examples of these can be seen in the Xuzhou Museum of Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses of the Han Dynasty, the Guishan Han Tomb, and the Gallery of Han Stone Sculpture, respectively. The Xuzhou Museum of Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses of the Han Dynasty, situated on the west side of Lion Hill, displays thousands of terracotta warriors and horses. Xuzhou Han City, located in Jiuli District, is a Han-style modern building. It is also a teleplay and film base for China Central Television (CCTV). Xuzhou also has many special villages, such as Peixian County, Mazhuang Village and Qijia Village. Mazhuang Village is the "Chinese Folk Custom and Culture Village". The most recommendable cuisines in Xuzhou include Fish Stewed in Mutton (Yang Fang Cang Yu), Steaming Turtle and Chicken (Ba Wang Bie Ji) and Dongpo Meat.
