Introduction
 
Huai'an is located in the northern part of Jiangsu. It neighbors Yancheng in the east, Yangzhou in the south, Anhui Province in the west, and Lianyungang in the north. The city is 360 km from Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu Province. The climate in Huai'an is subtropical monsoon, with average temperature at 15-20°C.

Huai'an has long been a transport hub in Jiangsu. The Beijing-Shanghai Highway, the Nanjing-Suqian-Xuzhou Highway, the Suqian-Huai'an Highway and the Nanjing-Huai'an Highway connect the city with Beijing and other cities in Jiangsu Province. Nanjing Lukou International Airport is within 2.5 hours' drive from Huai'an.

Huai'an is rich in natural resources. It has one of the world's largest rock salt deposits. The attapulgite reserve in the city is about 500 million tons, accounting for 70% of China's total.
 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, GDP of Huai'an soared 13.8% from a year earlier to RMB 134.5 billion. The value-added output from the agriculture, industry and service sectors accounted for 14.1%, 48.1% and 37.8% of the city's GDP, respectively.

The industrial value-added output amounted to RMB54.47 billion, up 17.4% year on year. Machinery, textile, tobacco, food and beverages, construction materials and petrochemicals form the major industries in Huai'an. The leading enterprises in Huaian include Huaiyin Cigarette Manufacturing Plant, Jiangsu Flight Electric Equipment Manufacture Co. Ltd and Nanjing Pharmaceutical (Huai'an).

Huaiyin Cigarette Manufacturing Plant, set up in 1945, is one of the oldest state-owned enterprises in Huai'an. With total asset of RMB 1.1 billion and annual production capacity of 600,000 boxes, it is a major cigarette producer in China.

As a national historical and cultural city, Huai'an attracted nearly 11.59 million tourists in 2010, of which 11.56 million were domestic travelers. The total tourism revenue exceeds RMB 11.9 billion in 2010, up 18.4% year on year.

The total foreign trade value in Huai'an rose 50.1% year on year to US$2.17 billion in 2010. The export value hit US$1.49 billion, while import value amounted to US$0.68 billion.

The city approved 244 foreign-funded projects in 2010, with contractual registered capital of US$2.3 billion. The utilized FDI reached US$1.05 billion, up 92.2% year on year, of which US$0.48 billion were from Taiwan enterprises.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

The history of Huai'an extends back 5,000 years, when people settled in the present-day territory of the city. In the Sui and Tang Dynasties (AD581-AD907), the opening of the Grand Canal boosted the economy in Huai'an. The boom in the economy lasted through the Ming and Qing Dynasties (AD1368-1911). The city is the birthplace of the Prime Minister-Zhou Enlai. Zhou Enlai, the first prime minister in China, held the premiership from October 1949 until his death in 1976. In February 1972, he and U.S. president Richard Nixon signed the famous Shanghai Communiqué, an important diplomatic document for the normalization of the two countries’ relations.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Tieshansi National Forest Park, Qingyan Garden, Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall, Zhenhai Tower, and Zhou Enlai's Former Residence are the foremost places of interest in Huai'an. Qingyan Garden, also known as Chengnan Park, is the garden of a government official in the Qing Dynasty. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit Huai'an. The city is home to Huaiyang Cuisine, which is known for dishes such as Duck Egg and Pork Porridge, Sour Vegetable Fish, Guo Tie, Steamed Pork Rice Wrap and Sliced Fatty Pork.
