Introduction
 

Jiaxing lies in the northern Zhejiang province of the Yangtze River Delta of China. It is situated on the Grand Canal (Beijing-Hangzhou Canal) - the longest man-made canal in the world. It neighbors Hangzhou to the southwest, Huzhou to the west, Shanghai to the northeast and the Jiangsu province to the north. With a subtropical monsoon climate, it enjoys abundant rainfall and sunshine.

Jiaxing serves as the juncture of the Hangzhou-Shanghai Railway and Shanghai-Hangzhou Highway. The 320 State Highway runs across the city and has been designated as a station of the proposed Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev Train Line. The city is within the 1.5 hour circle of three major international airports, namely Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport.

 
Economic Features
 

In 2010, the city's GDP edged up by 13.7% from a year earlier to RMB 229.6 billion. It generated RMB 12.63 billion from its agriculture sector, RMB 134.21 billion from its construction and industry sector, and RMB 82.76 billion from its service sector.

In 2010, value-added industrial output amounted to RMB 119.1 billion, up 16.2% year on year. The gross industrial output amounted to RMB 513.75 billion.
The city's mainstream industries in Jiaxing include printing, textile, leather, electricity supply and chemicals. Jiaxin is known as the "home of silk". Textile production is one of its main strengths. There are 8 textile production bases within Jiaxing, where around 25,000 textile producers gather together. It is also the world's largest exporter of leather goods. Haining in Jiaxing is famed for being the "home of leather" in China.

With the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant - China's first self-designed nuclear power station - set up in Jiaxing, the city has become an important energy base in East China.

In 2010, the city's foreign trade value amounted to US$22.82 billion, increased 32.6% year-on-year. The export value increased 30% year-on-year to US$16.04 billion, while the import value increased by 39.3% year-on-year to US$6.78 billion. Machinery and textile are major export products with the export value of US$4.89 billion and US$2.63 billion, accounting for 30.5% and 16.5% of the city's total export.

In 2010, the city has approved 300 foreign invested enterprises to set up business in the city with the contractual FDI of US$3.21 billion. The utilized FDI amounted to US$1.61 billion, increased 20.6% year on year.

 
Cultural Highlights
 
As the place of origin for Majiabang Culture in the New Stone Age, Jiaxing’s history can be traced back to over 7,000 years. In 242 A.D., it received its current name. With an abundance of fish and rice, it achieved great economic progress during the Sui Dynasty (581-618A.D.), due to the construction of the Hangzhou-to-Zhenjiang section of the Grand Canal.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Jiading has two famous lakes - South Lake and Nanbei Lake. Due to its geographic features, water towns make up much of Jiaxing’s distinctive landscape. The most renowned water towns in Jiaxing are Wuzhen and Xitang. With a history of over 1,000 years, Wuzhen has profound historical and cultural heritage. Xitang is a historic town featuring Ming and Qing architecture. It was built along the river and has 27 stone bridges.

Jiaxing is famous for its rice-made snacks, such as glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. It holds the “Steamed Rice Dumpling Festival” every summer, which attracts numerous rice dumpling manufacturers.
