In terms of population, Shenyang is the third-largest city in North-East China, after Harbin and Changchun, and is also the provincial capital of Liaoning Province.
Shenyang is located north of Liaoning Province’s centre. It is surrounded by eight industrial cities withinin a radius of 150 km, all of which focus on the elemental and processing industries.
Shenyang is one of China's most important railway hubs, due to its advantageous location at one of only two joint points between the rail networks of North-East China and the rest of the country. In addition, the Dalian Port and Yingkou Port, two major seaports in North-East China, are located within 400 km of Shenyang.
Shenyang facilitates excellent education conditions, and is home to the renowned North-Eastern University, which has provided an exceptional talent pool for in the employment industry of engineering.
Economic Features
In 2010, GDP of the city rose 14.1% to RMB 501.7 billion. Shenyang was one of the major heavy-industrial bases which were set up by the country after 1949, and was focused on equipment manufacturing. It is honored as the "Equipment Department of China".
In 2010, value-added industrial output of the city rose 19.1% to RMB 236.14 billion. The value-added industrial output of heavy industry and light industry amounted to RMB 174.02 billion and RMB 62.12 billion, accounts for 73.69% and 26.31% of the city's total value-added industrial output.
State-owned enterprises (SOE) are used to hardship in business in Shenyang since China launched its market economy, because of their low efficiencies and heavy debt. At present, this is not the case; by the end of 2009, 90% of the local SOEs had finished their shareholding reform, and Shenyang is still a city where SOEs concentrate. In 2009, the value-added industrial output of SOEs amounted to RMB 41.12 billion, accounted for 20.38% of the city's total.
Shenyang has eight pillar industries, including equipment manufacturing, automobiles and auto-parts, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, IT products, agricultural products-processing, ferrous metallurgy, nonferrous metallurgy, aviation and aerospace equipment-manufacturing.
In 2010, the value-added industrial output of the eight industries reached RMB 185.29 billion, up 18.9% over 2009, and accounting for 80.3% of the city's total industries. Among them, equipment manufacturing provided the largest value of RMB 118.76 billion, accounting for 50.3% of the city's total value-added industrial output.
The service industry has seen a rapid growth in recent years. In 2010, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 224.22 billion, contributing 43.1% of the city's GDP. In 2010, more than 57.17 million tourists have visited the city, while the tourism income amounted to RMB 52.83 billion.
In the same year, the total import and export value increased 19.5% to US$7.86 billion, while the utilized FDI reached US$5.05 billion. Shenyang is the second largest destination for FDI in Liaoning, after Dalian.
Cultural Highlights
Shenyang is a very old city with over 2,300 years of history. Given the name "Shengjing", it was the former capital of China's Qing Dynasty, and had a large Manchu population. After Beijing was established as the capital for Qing, Shenyang was considered an auxiliary capital.
Shenyang has several civil arts, including Shenyang Yangge, and the Drama of Twain Players. Shenyang Yangge, which is a street-performance carried out by street-performers in the early days of Shenyang, has now become the most well-known art form representative of Shenyang, differing from the common North-Eastern-style, Yangge, by utilizing stilts in the shows. The Drama of Twain Players is a song-and-dance duet, and is most popular in the North-East.
Tourist Attraction
Being the auxiliary capital of Qing, Shenyang has many historical and scenic spots to encourage tourists, including the Shenyang Imperial Palace, the Fu Mausoleum and the Zhao Mausoleum. Other places with a high tourist turnover are the Taiqing Temple, the Xinle Relic, the Shisheng Temple, the Four Pagodas and Four Temples of the Early Qing Dynasty, the South Mosque and the Nanguan Church.
Cuisine in Shenyang is deeply influenced by the Manchu cooking style, in addition to many other foreign styles, such as Japanese, Korean and Russian foods. The stand-out features are the use of strong flavors, salt and oil. The Manchu-Han Banquet is the most famous cuisine in Shenyang, and is a dining process that gathers together the most wonderful dishes in Chinese cooking; however, it is incredibly expensive, usually thousands of dollars. Other well-known dishes in Shenyang cuisine are Laobian Dumplings and Haicheng Meat Pies.
