Located in the center of Liaoning, Anshan is a prefectural level city which is famous for its iron reserve, and is called the "Capital of Steel".
Anshan is located between Shenyang and Dalian. It is connected to the rest of the country by the means of one railway and one highway.
Anshan has a continental climate, with an average annual temperature of 8°C. The winter in Anshan is cold and dry, while the summer remains temperate and pleasant, due to plenty of summer showers and rainfalls.

Anshan has an abundance of minerals in reserve. Its reserve of iron reaches 10 billion tons, which accounts for one quarter of the nation's total. In addition to iron reserve, the reserve of magnesite and talc are 2.3 billion tons and 60 million tons, respectively accounting for 80% and 40% of the nation's total.
Benefiting from this advantage, Anshan's industry is mainly based on steel production. Angang Steel is the most well-known company in Anshan, and is also one of the major steel producers of the entire nation. By the end of first quarter of 2010, the total asset of the company reached RMB 104 billion. The major products of Angang Steel are iron, steel and steel products, the net profit of the company amounted to RMB 686 million in 2009.
In addition to the steel industry, other pillar industries of Anshan are equipment manufacturing, mineral processing, and the production of textiles.
Anshan has established good foreign-trade relationships with over 100 countries. In 2009, the total foreign trade reached US$3.17 billion while the utilized FDI amounted to US$738 million.

Anshan was constructed in 1937. During the history of Anshan, many famous figures in social and political circles were associated with Anshan, including national heroes, models and artists, including the most well-known general, Zhang Xueliang: a man who successfully persuaded all Chinese people to rise up and fight together against the Japanese in the Second World War.
Each year, an exhibition for gems and jade is held in Anshan, during which a variety of the two are shown, including You Jade. The reserve of You Jade in Anshan accounts for 60% of the world's total reserve.

Anshan’s tourist attractions are at their best from April to October in any given year. The Tanggangzi Hot Spring, a mere fifteen minutes away from Anshan’s downtown area, is one of the four famous hot springs of the nation. In addition to the hot spring, there is the Qian Mountain, the Yao Mountain and the Baiyun Mountain, which are places of natural scenic beauty.
In the culinary world of China, Anshan's most well-known dish is the Haicheng Pie. Comprising of lean pork and beef, the pie is garnished with seasonable vegetables and sauces made from ten herbs and lilies. The pie is fine-baked, and has a long history of over a hundred years, making it a famous dish in China.
