Introduction
 
Daxing'anling Prefecture, lying at the north end of Heilongjiang Province, is the northernmost prefecture in China. It is adjacent to Xiaoxing'anling to the east, Inner Mongolia to the west, the Songnen Plain to the south and Russia to the north.

The largest prefecture among 13 prefecture and prefecture-level cities in Heilongjiang Province, Daxing’anling covers an area of 84,600 sq km. However, it has the smallest population in the province. By the end of 2009, the prefecture's population stood at 526,096. It has a cold monsoon climate. The average temperature in the prefecture is about -2.8℃.

Daxing'anling has the largest forested area in China. The timber reserves in the prefecture hit 587 million steres, accounting for 26.6% of Heilongjiang's total and 7.8% of China's total. It is also rich in wild animals and plants as well as in mineral resources. Many rare animals, such as spotted deer, bronze bears and sables, all of which are species protected at the state-level, have been found in this prefecture. The proven coal reserves in the prefecture total 120 million tons.

Transportation in Daxing'anling mainly relies on the railways, which connect the prefecture with Harbin, the provincial capital of Heilongjiang, Beijing, Tianjin and other cities in China.
 
Economic Features
 
Daxing'anling is the smallest economy among the 13 prefecture and prefecture-level cities in Heilongjiang Province in terms of GDP in 2009. The city's GDP grew 16.1% to RMB 9.82 billion.

Agricultural industry is the largest contributor to the city's economic growth. In 2010, the primary industry has value added industrial output of RMB 3.94 billion, accounting for 40.1% of the city's total. Forestry is a pillar of the prefecture's primary industry. In 2010, gross output value from forestry soared 2.8% to RMB 2.52billion.

The industrial sector in Daxing'anling lags behind that of other cities in Heilongjiang Province. In 2010, value-added industrial output of the city amounted to RMB 3.05 billion, up 39.9% year on year. Mining and wood processing are the two major pillar of the prefecture's industrial sector. In 2010, gross industrial output from mining and wood processing reached RMB 1.07 billion, constituting 76.6% of the industrial sector's total.

Other major industries in Daxing'anling include coal mining and dressing and agricultural products processing. The prefecture is home to Daxing'anling Forest Group and Beiqishen Green Industrial Group. Daxing'anling Forest Group is a leading state-owned wood supplier and processor.

The service sector, the second largest sector in Daxing'anling, gained value-added output of RMB 3.64 billion in 2010, contributing 37.08% to the city's economy Tourism is a pillar of the prefecture's service sector. In 2010, more than 2.23 million tourists visited Daxing'anling, increasing by 51.9% from a year ago, while tourism revenue reached RMB 2.02 billion, rising 61.7% year on year.

The foreign trade value in Daxing'anling amounted to US$34.15 million, up 67% year on year. The export value hit US$31.57 million, increased 116.5% year on year, while the import value topped US$2.58 million, decreased 44.8% year on year. Wood products and agricultural products are the major export products from Daxing'anling.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

The history of Daxing'anling can be traced back to the Paleolithic Age. During the Zhou Dynasty, the Sushen people, who are the ancestors of the Manchus, lived in this region and were ruled by the Zhou Regime. The development of Daxing'anling started in the 1900s, when the Qiqihar-Manzhouli Railway was constructed in the region. Daxing'anling Prefecture was founded late in 1970.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Daxing'anling is famous for its unpolluted forest area and beautiful natural scenery. It has several national parks, such as Wuying National Forest Park and Moerdaoga National Forest Park, and many nature reserves, such as Huzhong National Nature Reserve. Located at the north end of China's territory, Mohe County of Daxing'anling is the only place in China where people can watch the northern lights. People can also enjoy the rare, long polar day on Jun 21 or Jun 22. The best season to visit the prefecture is between June-August, when the days are long.

Daxing'anling is home to many wild mushrooms and edible fungi, which are often used as main ingredients in local dishes. Travelers should taste Stewed Chicken with Mushrooms, Toasted Mushrooms and Fried Pork with Mu Er (a kind of edible fungus).
