Huanggang, a prefecture-level city in the eastern part of Hubei Province, is part of Wuhan City Cluster, which consists of Wuhan and eight other cities within 100 km of Wuhan. Wuhan City Cluster was approved as an experimental zone for energy saving and environmentally friendly projects in 2007.
Huanggang is ideally situated. It lies at the juncture of Hubei Province, Henan Province, Anhui Province and Jiangxi Province. The Yangtze River goes through the city. It takes less than 1.5 hours to drive from Huanggang to Wuhan Tianhe Airport or Jiujiang Airport of Jiangxi Province. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway, the Hefei-Jiujiang Railway, the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Shanghai-Wuhan Railway all run through the city, forming a convenient railway system.
The city covers an area of 400 sq km, accounting for 9.4% of Hubei Province's total. It has a population of 7.4 million. It enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with abundant rainfall and sunshine. The average temperature in the city is about 16℃.
Economic Features
In 2010, Huanggang's GDP amounted to RMB 86.23 billion, featuring a stable growth of 14.1% over the previous year. It ranked fifth among the 13 prefecture and prefecture-level cities in the province.
Huanggang has a balanced economic structure. Value-added output from primary industry and secondary industry grew 4.3% and 18.5% from a year earlier to RMB 24.69 billion and RMB 32.82 billion, composing 28.64% and 38.06% of the city's GDP, respectively. The service sector, the second largest contributor to the city's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 28.72 billion in 2010 and comprised 33.3% of Huanggang's GDP.
Huanggang is a major crop and edible-oil plant base in Hubei Province. In 2010, output of crops and edible-oil reached to 3.21 million tons and 0.48 million tons, respectively.
In 2010, value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size or above edged up 24.56 billion. Meanwhile, value-added industrial output from heavy industrial and light industrial enterprises with designated size and above surged 27.5% and 18% to RMB 14.66 billion and RMB 9.4 billion, accounting for 62.7% and 37.3% of the sector's total, respectively.
Food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, construction materials and machinery are the pillar industries in the city. Huanggang has attracted investments from large domestic companies such as China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd, Yili and Aokang.
Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd, founded in Beijing in 1992, is the largest juice maker in China. By the end of 2009, it controlled over 40% of China's juice market. The Huanggang unit started operation in 2004. In 2009, net profit of the company rose 162.5% to RMB 233.5 million.
The consumer market in Huanggang was booming in 2010. The sales of consumer goods topped RMB 40.74 billion, representing a strong growth of 22.2% from the previous year. In 2010, more than 8.19 million tourists have visited the city, while the tourism income amounted to RMB 4.4 billion.
In 2010, foreign trade value exceeded US$264 million, with a decrease of 44.8% from a year earlier. The export value surpassed US$209.03 million, decreased 48.4% year on year, while the import value stood at US$55.07 million, up 8.8% year on year.
In 2010, the utilized FDI in Huanggang hit US$135.83 million, soaring 8.8% from a year earlier. DuPont, the world's leading biotechnological products producer and supplier, has invested in projects in Huanggang.
Cultural Highlights
Huanggang's history can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. The earliest administrative agent set up in the region was Bendi, which was established during the Xia and Shang Dynasty. It got its current name in AD598 during the Sui Dynasty.
The city has a profound Buddhist history. Daoxin, who is one of the great ancient Chinese Buddhists, were born in Huanggang. Huangguang is also home to Bi Sheng, who is said to have invented the first movable type printing press technology in the world.
Tourist Attraction
Chibi, an ancient town that is also known as Red Cliff or Dongpo Chibi, is the most popular tourist attraction in Huanggang. Most of the buildings there were constructed over 1,000 years ago. Su Shi, a great poet of the Song Dynasty, praised Chibi in his poems. Over 100 steles of his works are preserved in the region. Huanggang is also rich in natural tourist attractions. Dabieshan National Forest Park, covering an area of 300 sq km, is famous for its beautiful natural scenery.
Huanggang offers great variety of local snacks, such as Fried Rice Ball, Ciba Chicken Soup (stewed chicken with rice cake) and Dongpo Cake (crispy pancake).
