Introduction
 
Chaoyang is located in the western part of Liaoning Province, bordering Chifeng and Tongliao in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Qinhuangdao and Chengde in Hebei Province. The largest prefecture-level city in Liaoning Province, it covers an area of approximately 19,698 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 3.43 million by the end of 2009.  

Chaoyang has a temperate continental monsoon climate with plenty of sunshine and four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 5.4-8.7°C, while the average annual precipitation totals approximately 450-580 mm.
 
Chaoyang is rich in mineral resources. The large manganese ore bed located in Chaoyang accounts for 99% of Liaoning's total manganese reserves. In addition, Chaoyang is one of the two major asbestos production bases in the province. Reserves of iron ore rank fourth after those of Anshan, Benxi, and Liaoyang in Liaoning.

Transportation in Chaoyang is very convenient. State Highway 101 runs through the city and extends to Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning, and Beijing, the capital of China. In addition, there are railways connecting Chaoyang with surrounding cities including Beijing, Shenyang, Dalian, Dandong, Chengde, and Chifeng.
 
Economic Features
 
Chaoyang realized GDP of RMB 51.81 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 18% year on year.

The agricultural sector, which is the smallest contributor to the city's economy, generated value-added industrial output of RMB 10.2 billion in 2009, accounting for 19.69% of the city's GDP.

In 2009, value-added industrial output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 25.98 billion and accounted for 50.14% of the city's total.

The industrial sector realized value-added industrial output of RMB 21.1 billion, contributing 81.2% to the secondary sector's total, while the weighting of heavy industry and light industry was 93.1% to 6.9%.

Currently, Chaoyang has formed a complete industrial system involving metallurgy, coal mining, machinery, electronics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, paper making, and food processing.

In 2009, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 15.63 billion, contributing 30.17% of the city's GDP.

Chaoyang’s export value amounted to US$370.27 million in 2009. There are approximately 160 kinds of export goods and more than 60 different countries and areas import them.

In 2009, the utilized foreign direct invest in the city rose 46.1% year on year to US$73.32 million.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Chaoyang is a famous historical and cultural city in China and one of the headstreams of Chinese culture. Pigeon Cave Ancient Human Ruins, one of the earliest-inhabited areas in Northern China, indicates that as early as 100,000 years ago, people here were able to use tools and fires and had an established social culture.

Chaoyang is also the birthplace of Hongshan (red mountain) culture. The Goddess Temple, the Stone Tomb, and the large-scale Soil Platform are representative symbols of Hongshan culture.

In addition, Chaoyang boasts a profound red revolutionary history. Zhao Shangzhi, the most famous revolutionary and the initiator and major leader of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Coalition, was born in Chaoyang.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Historic landmarks of the city include Dongshanzui Sacrifice Ruins and Chaoyang Doubel Tower. Beautiful natural scenery spots include Nuluer Tiger Mountain Nature Reserve, Peachblossom Mountain Scenery Area, and Fenghuang Mountain, which was given an AAA rating (the third highest level among domestic scenery spots).

In Chaoyang, Mahua Cloth, famous for its bright color and elegant quality, is very popular among local people. It is widely used for bedding, curtains, and clothes.

In addition, local fruits and nuts such as almonds and jujubes, which boast a high quality and nutritional value, can be excellent souvenirs for tourists from home and abroad.

The cuisine of Chaoyang, with hundreds of years of history, is a blend of Manchu, Mongol, Hui and Han cuisine. Sliced Cake, Wantuo (which is made from buckwheat paste), and Fermented Bean Curd are three most popular snacks in Chaoyang.
