Jingmen, lying at the western bank of the Han River, is located in the central part of Hubei Province. It borders Xiaogan to the east, Jingzhou to the south, Yichang to the west and Xiangfan to the north. Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei, is situated 217 km from the city. Jingmen covers an area of 12,404 sq km, accounting for 6.7% of Hubei's total. It has a population of 2.6 million.
The city is easily accessible by air, rail and highway. It is 115 km from Yichang Sanxia International Airport and 245 km from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport. The Taiyuan-Macau Highway, the Hangzhou-Lanzhou Highway, the Jingmen-Wuhan Highway and the Jiaozuo-Liuzhou Railway go through the city, link the city with other major domestic cities.
Jingmen enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate, with rich sunshine and rainfalls. The average temperature in the city is about 16℃.
Economic Features
In 2010, Jingmen's GDP grew 15.6% from a year earlier to RMB 73 billion, ranking fifth among 13 prefecture and prefecture-level cities in the province.
Value-added output from primary industry and service industry surged 5% and 13.3% to RMB 14.5 billion and RMB 23.18 billion, making up 19.9% and 31.7% of the city's GDP, respectively. Secondary industry, the largest contributor to the city's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 35.5 billion in 2010 and contributed 48.4% to Jingmen's GDP.
Jingmen is an agricultural base in Hubei. In 2010 output of crops, cotton and edible-oil plants reached 2.59 million tons, 43,300 tons and 0.37 million tons, respectively.
In 2010, value-added industrial output from industrial enterprises with designated size and above soared 25% to RMB 33 billion. Heavy industrial and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above reached RMB 22.13 billion and RMB 10.91 billion in value-added output in 2010, making up 67% and 33% of the prefecture's total.
Petrochemicals, machinery, food and beverages and construction materials are the pillar industries in the city. Examples of large industrial enterprises in the city include Sinopec Jingmen Oil Refining Plant, J.S. Machine, Chero Beer and Gezhouba Cement Plant.
Sinopec Jingmen Oil Refining Plant was founded in Jingmen in 1970. It is a subsidiary under Sinopec, the largest oil refiner in China. It had annual crude oil refining capacity of 6 million tons.
In 2010, the foreign trade value in Jingmen surpassed US$387.84 million, representing a sharp increase of 69.6% from the previous year. The export value exceeded US$298.03 million, increased 72.8%, while the import value reached US$89.81 million. Agricultural products, electronic and machinery products, chemicals and petrochemicals are the major export products from Jingmen. The city's utilized FDI was US$146.04 million in 2010, up 19.8% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Jingmen's history can be traced back to the Han Dynasty, when Dangyang County was set up in the region. Jingmen got its current name in AD805 during the Tang Dynasty, when Jingmen County was founded. In 1983, Jingmeng was promoted to be prefecture-level city in Hubei by the State Council.
Jingmen is located where the Chu cultue and the Three Kingdoms culture blended. Chu culture originated from Chu State, which existed from the Spring-and-Autumn Period (770-475BC) to the Warring States Period (476-221BC).
Tourist Attraction
Jingmen’s tourist attractions include Mingxian Mausoleum, Baiyun Pavilion, Yuanyou Palace, Huangxian Cave Scenic Area, Dakou National Forest Park and Xiangshan Scenic Area. Mingxian Mausoleum, located 7.5 km east of Zhongxiang, was first built in AD1519 by the Ming Shizong, an emperor of Ming Dynasty. It consists of many Ming-style bridges, towers, city walls and pagodas. Dakou National Forest Park is famous for its wild plants and animals, beautiful scenery and diverse historical sites.
The city offers a great variety of tasty local dishes, such as Longhu Fish Cake (which is made of mashed fish meat, eggs, ginger and other ingredients) and Taishi Cake (which is also known as Cha Hua Snack and is made of flour, sugar, orange, nuts and candied melon).
