Introduction
 

Shiyan, seated in the northwestern part of Hubei Province, borders Xiangfan to the east, Ankang of Shaanxi Province to the west, Shennongjia to the south, Chongqing to the southwest, and Nanyang of Henan Province to the north. It covers an area of 23,698 sq km and has a population of 3.5 million. It has a subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons.

Wudang Mountain, a famous Taoism mountain, is located in Shiyan. The ancient building complex of Wudang Mountain has been included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Shiyan is a famous auto production base in China because Dongfeng Motor, the third largest automaker after SAIC and FAW in China in terms of auto sales in 2009, is headquartered in the city.

Shiyan is rich in natural resources. Over 2,700 species of Chinese medicinal herbs and over 50 kinds of mineral resources, such as gold, silver and rare earth elements, have been discovered in the region. The transportation infrastructure is well-established. The Xiangfan-Chongqing Railway runs through the city, connecting it with Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Zhengzhou and other cities. State highway 209 and State Highway 316 intersect in the city. Xiangfan Liuji Airport and Laohekou Airport are located less than 150 km from Shiyan.

 
Economic Features
 
Shiyan is the 7th largest economy among the 13 prefectures and prefecture-level cities in Hubei Province. In 2010, its GDP paced up 19.5% from a year earlier to RMB 73.68 billion.

The city is an industrial base in Hubei. In 2010, value-added output from secondary industry increased by 30.8% to RMB 40.21 billion, comprising 54.6% of the city's economy. Value-added output from the service sector and agricultural sector grew 10.6% and 5.1% to RMB 25.69 billion and RMB 7.78 billion, constituting 34.8% and 10.6% of the city's GDP, respectively.

Value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size or above exceeded RMB 36.34 billion in 2010, rising 39.2% from a year earlier. Heavy and light industrial enterprises realized RMB 34.53 billion and RMB 1.8 billion in value-added industrial output in 2010, making up of 95.1% and 4.9% of the city's total, respectively.

Shiyan is an auto production base in Hubei. The autos and auto parts industry achieved value-added industrial output of nearly RMB 26.25 billion in 2010, comprising 72% of the city's total. Shiyan is a production base for large automakers such as Dongfeng Motor, Dongfeng Industrial, Dongfeng Yu An, Double Star (Dongfeng) Tires and Hubei Sitom. Dongfeng sold 1.9 million units of cars in 2009, up 43.6% year on year. In the first half of 2010, the company sold 0.972 million units of cars, while sales revenue and net profits amounted to RMB 61.85 billion and RMB 6.53 billion, respectively.

Other major industries in Shiyan include pharmaceuticals, textile, metallurgy, electricity production and supply and chemicals. Value-added industrial output of the above pillar industries amounted to RMB 4.18 billion in 2009, composing 16.4% of the city's total. Hubei Wudangshan Bio-Pharmaceuticals and Shiyan Kangdi Pharmaceuticals of Wuhan Jianmin Pharmaceutical Group are the leading pharmaceutical makers in Shiyan.

Tourism is a pillar of the service sector in Shiyan. In 2010, more than 14.77 million foreign and domestic tourists visited the city, which brought tourism revenue of RMB 8.93 billion. Shiyan's tourism income ranks fourth among 13 prefectures and prefecture-level cities in Hubei Province, following Wuhan, Yichang and Xiangfan.

In 2010, the foreign trade value totaled US$240 million, comprising export value of US$200 million and import value of US$40 million. Auto and auto tires are the major export products from Shiyan.

The utilized FDI in the city surpassed US$60 million, representing a sharp rise of 9.4% from the previous year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Shiyan enjoys splendid cultures and a profound history. The Neolithic Ruins discovered in Yun County of Shiyan in 1975 showed that Longshan culture, Yangshao culture and Qujialing culture, all of which are part of Han Chinese culture, are blended in the region.

The city got its current name during the Ming Dynasty. Shiyan, whose name means ten dams in Chinese, derives its name from the ten dams built in Yun County. 

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Shiyan is surrounded by diverse historical sites and beautiful natural scenery. Wudang Mountain Scenic Spot consists of many ancient buildings, most of which can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty. Travelers should also go to see Shennong Forest Zone, the Hot Springs in Fang County, Danjiangkou Dam in Dangjiangkou, Chu Great Wall, the Dinosaur Fossils and Fulong Mountain Nature Reserve.

The local dishes in Shiyan are also popular among the tourists. Wild Mushroom Soup, Spicy Shrimp Balls, Grilled Fish and Zhuxi Zeng Pen (stewed ham, chicken, mushrooms, poached eggs, sliced bean-curd and other ingredients) are the most characteristic local dishes in Shiyan.
