Introduction
 

Jinzhou is located in the southwestern part of Liaoning Province, at the southern foot of the Songling Mountains, north of Liaodong Bay. It covers an area of 10,111 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 3.1 million by the end of 2009.  

Jinzhou has a temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 8-9°C while the average annual precipitation reaches approximately 540-640 mm.

Bordering on the Bohai Sea, Jinzhou is a major salt production base in Liaoning. In addition, Jinzhou is rich in mineral resources such as oil, natural gas, coal, limestone, bentonite, fluorite, and granite. 

Transportation in Jinzhou is very convenient. The Beijing-Harbin Railway, the Qinhuangdao-Shenyang Passenger Line, the Beijing-Harbin Highway, and the Beijing-Shenyang Expressway run through the city.

Additionally, the Jinzhou-Fuxin Expressway, the Jinzhou-Chaoyang Expressway,  and State Highway 102 make Jinzhou and surrounding prefecture-level cities an urban center. The Port of Jinzhou, situated in Jinzhou Bay in the northeastern part of Bohai Gulf, has an annual throughput of capacity of over 5.5 million tons. Jinzhou Airport, 7 km from the city's downtown, operates scheduled flights to major cities such as Beijing, the capital of China, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

 
Economic Features
 
Jinzhou realized GDP of RMB 79.01 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 16% year on year. The city's GDP ranked fifth out of fourteen prefecture-level cities in the province.

The agricultural sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 13.31 billion in 2009, accounting for 16.8% of the city's GDP. Output of grain amounted to 1.94 million tons, decreased 7.9% year on year.

In 2009, value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 35.17 billion and accounted for 44.5% of the city's total.

Value-added industrial output generated by the industrial enterprises with designated size or above reached RMB 26.9 billion in 2009, up 22.3% compared to the previous year. Heavy industry and light industry amounted to RMB 20.7 billion and RMB 6.2 billion, accounting for 77% and 23% of the industrial sector.

Ferrous metal smelting and rolling, petrochemicals, and agricultural products processing are the pillar industries of Jinzhou. The value-added industrial output of the above three industries amounted to RMB 4.43 billion, RMB 4.05 billion and RMB 3.9 billion, respectively. As a whole, they realized value-added industrial output of RMB 12.38 billion, contributing 46% to the total generated by the industrial enterprises with designated size or above.

Jinzhou Port, a Shanghai-listed company, is principally engaged in the provision of cargo handling, storage and shipping services. In 2009, the company realized sales income of RMB 711.19 million and net profit of RMB 155.63 million. The port has handled 52.59 million tons cargo in 2009.

In 2009, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 30.54 billion, contributing 38.7% of the city's GDP. Tourism is important for the city's service sector. During 2009, more than 12.06 million tourists visited the city, up 36.8% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 9.63 billion, rising 38.6% compared to the previous year.

The city’s foreign trade amounted to US$1.75 billion in 2009, representing a healthy increase of 44.1% compared to the previous year. Exports soared 8.9% to US$806.47 million, while imports increased by 99.4% to US$940.46 million. Major import goods include mineral ore and crude oil, while export goods are coal, and machinery and electronic products. Japan, South Korea and the U.S. are the important trading partners of the city. In 2009, the utilized FDI of the city amounted to US$368.05 million, up 18.4% year on year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Jinzhou is a famous historical and cultural city, and also a business center and modern port city.

Jinzhou is home to Liaoxi buildings, cliff inscriptions, and temples from the Eestern Liao Kingdom.

In 1948, the famous Liaoshen Campaign of the Chinese Civil War started in Jinzhou. After 52 days of fighting, the armies of the Chinese Communist Party won the campaign and occupied all of Northeast China.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Jinzhou is rich in tourist attractions including Northern Putuo Mountain Scenery Spot, Jinzhou Museum, Fengguo Temple, Linghe Park, Bijia (Penholder) Mountain Scenery Area, and Liaosheng Battle Memorial Hall.

In Jinzhou, Goubangzi Water Filled Buns, Baijia Guoluo (Fried Dumplings), and Duji Ravioli are the most famous snacks.
