Introduction
 

Tieling is located in the northern part of Liaoning Province, in the middle of Songliao Plain. It covers an area of approximately 12,985 sq km. The population of the city amounted to 3.1 million by the end of 2009.  

Tieling has a temperate continental monsoon climate with plenty of sunshine and four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 6.3°C, while the average annual precipitation reaches approximately 700 mm.

Tieling is rich in mineral resources. Tiefa Coal Field, which has 2.3 billion tons of coal reserves, is one of the eight largest coal fields in China. In addition, reserves of limestone, ceramic clay, wollastonite, marble, copper, iron, lead, zinc, and gold are also abundant.

Transportation in Tieling is very convenient. Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, is only 84 km from Tieling. There are expressways connecting Tieling with surrounding cities such as Shenyang, Dalian, Anshan, Fushun, Siping, and Changchun. Railways also run through the city and extend to major domestic cities.

 
Economic Features
 
Tieling realized GDP of RMB 60.57 billion in 2009, representing a rise of 18% year on year. The city's GDP ranked twelfth out of fourteen prefecture-level cities in the province.

The agricultural sector, which is the smallest contributor to the city's economy, generated value-added industrial output of RMB 12.54 billion in 2009, accounting for only 20.7% of the city's GDP. The grain output of the city decreased 30% to 2.56 million tons in 2009.

In 2009, value-added output of secondary industry (industry and construction) amounted to RMB 31.11 billion and accounted for 51.4% of the city's total.

The industrial sector realized industrial output of industrial enterprises with designated size or above increased by 30% to RMB 141.75 billion. Heavy industry and light industry contributed RMB 100.83 billion and RMB 40.92 billion, accounting for 71% and 29% of the industrial sector.

Coal-fired power, advanced equipment manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, coal chemicals and bio-chemicals, automobile refitting, and new building materials are the pillar industries of Tieling.  

In 2009, the service sector generated value-added industrial output of RMB 16.93 billion, contributing 27.9% of the city's GDP.

Tourism is important for the city's service sector. During 2009, tourism income totaled RMB 6.27 billion, rising 35% compared to the previous year. Foreign tourists contributed US$22.74 million of the total tourism income, 28% more than in the previous year.

The total import and export value of Tieling amounted to US$513.89 million in 2009, with a sharp rise of 193.6% over the previous year. Exports rose 214.4% to US$502.99 million, while imports decreased 27.5% to US$10.9 million.

In 2009, Tieling attracted US$368.86 million in contractual foreign investment, while the utilized foreign direct invest in the city rose 43.1% year on year to US$171.97 million.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Tieling boasts a profound history. As early as 7,000 years ago, there were people living in this area. The city’s written history dates back to the Xia Dynasty, approximately 4,000 years ago.

There are 31 ethnic groups including the Han, the Man, the Hui, Mongols and Koreans living together in Tieling. The minority ethnic groups account for approximately 23% of the city's total population.

Zhou Enlai, the first and the most popular premier in China during the 20th century, once studied in Tieling Yingang Academy, and praised Tieling as his second hometown. Gao E, the author of the last 40 chapters of the famous masterpiece Stone Story in China, was also born in Tieling.

Errenzhuan, a comedy form of duet involving storytelling, singing and dancing, is very popular in Tieling and in Northeast China.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

The city’s historic landmarks include Chongshou Temple Tower and Tieling White Tower, and beautiful natural scenery spots such as Tieling Xiangya (ivory) Mountain Scenery Area, Tieling Qing River Tourism Resort, and Tieling Long (dragon) Mountain are very attractive tourist destinations.

In Tieling, Green Onion is a very popular vegetable among local people and has become a major export good of the city. In addition, Beef Pancakes and Sheep Intestine Soup are also delicious and popular dishes in Tieling.
