Chenzhou is the sixth largest economy in Hunan province. It is located in the southern area of Hunan province and covers an area of 19,388 sq km. At the end of 2009, Chenzhou had a population of 4.7 million, of which 1.9 million lived in urban areas.
Chenzhou has two districts, eight counties and one county-level city under its jurisdiction. Among the cities in Hunan province, Chenzhou is the city closest to Guangdong province. It is only 393km from Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province. The Beijing-Guangzhou railway passes through the city.
Economic Features
Chenzhou plays an important role in linking Hunan province with Guangdong province. In 2010, the city's GDP reached RMB 108.18 billion, an increase of 15.2% over the year before. The main driving force behind Chenzhou economic development is the manufacturing sector. In 2010, the value added output of the sector reached RMB 59.44 billion, accounting for 54.9% of the city's GDP. Agricultural sector and service sector has added value of RMB 12.68 billion and RMB 36.06 billion, accounting for 11.7% and 33.4% of the city's GDP.
In 2010, the value added industrial output of the sector reached RMB 55.33 billion, a rise of 20.9% from the previous year. Heavy industries played an important role. Value-added industrial output of heavy industry and light industry rose 23.6% and 21% to RMB 41.57 billion and RMB 6.46 billion, accounting for 86% and 14% of the industrial sector.
Chenzhou has six pillar industries: nonferrous metallurgy, energy, construction materials, pharmaceuticals and food processing, IT, chemicals and machinery. In 2010, Chenzhou's foreign trade increased by 77.4% to US$980 million. Export value increased 44.9% to US$620 million, while import value rose 192% to US$360 million. Major export products include silver, bismuth, satellite communication equipment, cotton, DVD players. Hong Kong, Japan, and the U.S. are the largest three export destinations.
In terms of utilized FDI, Chenzhou ranks second in Hunan province, after Changsha. In 2010, it reached US$530 million, an increase of 13.8%. Among them, US$430 million utilized FDI has been invested in the industrial sector, up 16.1% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Chenzhou is an ancient city with a history dating back more than 2,200 years. The new archaeological discovery in Guiyang county of Chenzhou has proven that primitive men had lived in the Chenzhou area 10,000 years ago. In 221 BC, Chenzhou was approved as a county by the Qin Dynasty. Since then, Chenzhou has become one of the commercial, military and transportation hubs in Hunan-Guangdong area.
Tourist Attraction
Chenzhou has four 4A-level scenic areas: Dongjiang Lake, Fuquan Resort, Paradise Hot Spring, and Suxian Mountain. Dongjiang Lake is located in the higher reaches of the Dongjiang River in Zixing county, Chenzhou. It is 38 km from downtown. Covering an area of 160 km2, the lake is as well known as Dongting Lake of South Xiang area. It has a large number of islands inside, of which the biggest one, Doushuai Island, is famous for its caverns.
Chenzhou is also well known for its six top local products such as Dongjiang River fish, Lingwu duck and Zilong Town crock meat. Tourists may enjoy them in restaurants anywhere in Chenzhou.
