Introduction
 

Yiyang is situated in the central-northern part of Hunan Province, on the shores of Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake after Poyang Lake in China. It borders Hubei Province to the north, Changde to the west, Huaihua to the southwest, Loudi to the south, Yueyang to the northeast and Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan Province, to the east.

The city enjoys a humid subtropical continental monsoon climate, with abundant rainfall and sunshine. It is rich in natural resources. It covers an area of 12,349 sq km, accounting for 5.83% of Hunan Province’s total. Mountains and hills occupy 56.5% of the city’s land area. Yiyang has a population of 4.7 million.

Waterway and highway transportation in Yiyang is very convenient. The Changsha-Yiyang Highway, the Changsha-Changde Highway and State Highway 319 run through the city, connecting it with other cities in Hunan. The Xiangqian Railway (which runs from Hunan to Guizhou), the Shijiazhuang-Changsha Railway and the Luoyang-Zhanjiang Railway link the city with other major cities throughout China.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, Yiyang's GDP reached RMB 71.23 billion, representing a strong growth of 14.7% over the previous year. Its GDP ranked 11th out of 14 prefectures and prefecture-level cities in the province.

Value-added output from primary industry rose 4.3% to RMB 16.24 billion in 2010, accounting for 22.8% of Yiyang's economy. Secondary industry, the second largest contributor the city's economy, generated RMB 28.84 billion in value-added output, making up 40.4% of the city's GDP. Tertiary industry, which is the strongest sector in Yiyang, realized value-added output of RMB 26.15 billion, comprising 36.7% of the city's economy.

Favorable climate and fertile land makes Yiyang a large agricultural production hub in Hunan. In 2010, Yiyang produced 2.39 million tons of crops, up 0.4% year on year.

Value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above grew 24.1% from a year earlier to RMB 22.78 billion in 2010. Heavy dominates the city's industrial sector. Value-added industrial output from heavy industrial and light industrial enterprises soared 29.6% and 17.6% to RMB 13.76 billion and RMB 9.02 billion in 2010, constituting 60% and 40% of the city's total, respectively.

Metallurgy, food and beverages, machinery, chemicals, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and power production and supply etc are the major industries in the city. The combined value-added industrial output amounted to RMB 19.85 billion, accounting for 87% of the industrial sector. Large companies in the city include Nice Yiyang Corp, Yiyang Power Plant and Yanjiang Paper.

Nice Yiyang Corp was set up in 2001 with an investment of RMB 300 million from Zhejiang-based Nice Group, a leading manufacturer of hygiene and oral care products in China. The unit in Yiyang, covering a construction area of 75,000 sq m, has an annual production capacity of 0.2 million tons of hygiene products.

The consumer market in Yiyang witnessed a stable growth in 2010. Sales of consumer goods in the city surged 18.6% to RMB 26.07 billion. Tourism is also a pillar of the city's service sector. In 2010, more than 12.96 million tourists have visited the city, while the total tourism income soared 21.5% to RMB 7.63 billion.

In 2010, foreign trade in Yiyang surpassed US$375.98 million, increased 66.9% from the previous year. Export value exceeded US$326.17 million, increased 65.3% from 2009, while import value was US$49.81 million, up 78.2% year on year.

In 2010, 20 foreign-funded projects won approval to set up in Yiyang. The utilized FDI in the city amounted to US$100.85 million, representing a rise of 9.8% from the previous year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Yiyang has a name that means “north side of the Yi River” because it is located on the Zijiang River, which used to be known as the Yi River. It boosts a long history of over 1,000 years. It was given its current name during the East Han Dynasty.

The city is a multi-cultural prefecture-level city in Hunan, as many ethnic minority groups, such as Tibetans, the Yao and the Miao, are living there. Huagu Opera, also called flower-drum opera, is popular in Yiyang.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Yiyang has plentiful natural scenic spots, including Mount Biyu, Sifang Mountain, Fuqiu Mountain and Xiunu Mountain. It also has abundant historical and cultural sites, such as Peigong Pavilion, Qixia Temple and Bailu Temple. Peigong Pavilion is located in the western part of Bailu Mount, along the southern side of Zijiang. It was reconstructed in 1923 in memory of Pei Xiu, a minister in the Tang Dynasty.

The most famous local snack in Yiyang is Hao Zi Pa Pa, which is made of glutinous rice and Tonghao, a kind of wild vegetable. It is healthy and delicate.
