Introduction
 

Yongzhou, seated in the southern part of Hunan Province, borders Shaoyang to the north, Guangxi Province to the southwest, Chenzhou to the east, and Hengyang to the northeast..It covers an area of 22,255 sq km and has a population of 5.1 million. It has a humid subtropical climate.

The city is situated at the juncture of Hunan,  Guangxi and Guangdong Provinces. It is only 400 km from Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong Province. The Xiangtan-Guilin Railway, State Highway 322 and State Highway 207 and 9 province-level highways connect Yongzhou and other major cities in the four provinces. Yongzhou Airport operates daily flights to Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan and Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan.

Yongzhou is rich in freshwater and mineral resources. Over 700 rivers run through the city. The demonstrated hydro power reserves in the city surpass 1 million kilowatts. It has over 68 million tons of manganese, accounting for 34.7% of Hunan's total and ranking first in Hunan Province.

 
Economic Features
 
Yongzhou's GDP grew 14.4% to RMB 76.7 billion in 2010, ranking eighth among the 14 prefecture and prefecture-level cities in the province.

The agriculture sector generated value-added output of RMB 19.06 billion in 2010, contributing 24.8% to Yongzhou's economy. The city produced 3.2 million tons of crops, up 0.74% year on year.

Secondary industry (construction and industry) realized RMB 27.86 billion in value-added output in 2010, comprising 36.3% of Yongzhou's GDP. In 2010, the city's total value-added industrial output hit RMB 23.68 billion, up 20.3% year on year.

Value-added output generated by enterprises with designated size and above increased by 24.1% to RMB 18.24 billion in 2010. Value-added industrial output of heavy industrial and light industrial firms with designated size and above have increased 25.8% and 22.8% year on year.

Autos and auto parts, metallurgy, paper making, chemicals and pharmaceuticals are the pillar industries in Yongzhou. Yongzhou is home to Changfeng Motor, a joint venture of Mitsubishi, Changfeng Group and other 7 local enterprises. Changfeng Motor was set up in 1996 with registered capital of RMB 222 million. It is a major passenger car maker in Hunan Province. in the first half of 2010, the operating revenue amounted to RMB 3.25 billion, while its net profit reached RMB 138.4 million.

The service sector, the strongest sector, gained value-added output of RMB 29.78 billion in 2010, accounting for 38.9% of the city's GDP.

In 2010, foreign trade value in Yongzhou totaled US$117.37 million, representing an increase of 54.09% from the previous year. Export value hit US$102.47 million, increased 55.08%, while the import value topped US$14.9million, inecreased 47.64% year on year. Metal products, agricultural products and equipment are the major export products of Yongzhou.

In 2010, Yongzhou attracted contractual foreign investments of US$439 million, while the utilized FDI in the city soared 17.4% to US$393 million. Large multinational companies, such as Mitsubishi, have set up businesses in the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Yongzhou's history extends back to the Neolithic Age, when human beings started inhabiting this area. Yongzhou was called Lingling before the Sui Dynasty. Different administrative agents controlled this area in ancient times, such as Changsha Shire of Qin Dynasty.

Since ancient times, a large number of ethnic minority groups, such as the Yao and the Zhuang, have been living in the area. Different folk arts and customs are well-preserved. Qi Opera is popular in this region. Qi Opera, originating from Qiyang County of Yongzhou, is also called Qiyang Opera, Da Xi and Qiyang Bangzi.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Yongzhou is famous for its beautiful mountain and river scenery. Jiuyi Mountain in Ningyuan County, Wu Brook in Qiyang, Sunhuang Mountain in Dong'an, Yangming Mountain in Shuangpai and Longhu Pass in Jiangyong provide tourists plenty of choices to view the beautiful natural scenery of Yongzhou.

Travelers in Yongzhou should also try the tasty local snacks. The most characteristic local snacks in Yongzhou are Xian Tofu (fried bean-curd stuffed with mashed meat and vegetables) and Ningyuan Braised Duck.
