Anyang, reputed as the "origin place of oracle-bone inscription", is a prefecture-level city in the northern part of Henan Province. The city borders Puyang to the east, Hebi and Xinxiang to the south, Shanxi Province across the Taihang Mountains and faces Handan of Hebei Province across the Zhanghe River.
Lying at the juncture of Shanxi and Henan provinces, Anyang serves as a transportation hub in Henan Province. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing-Zhujiang Highway, the Daqing-Guangzhou Highway as well as State Highway 106 and 107 connect the city with most domestic cities. It takes merely 40 minutes from Anyang downtown to Handan Airport, which operates regular flights to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Dalian, Xiamen, Hangzhou and Xi'an.
Anyang covers an area of 7,413 sq km and has a population of 5.2 million. Anyang enjoys a warm continental monsoon climate. The average temperature in the city is about 14°C.
Economic Features
In 2010, Anyang's GDP exceeded RMB 131.13 billion, featuring a strong growth of 13.1% from the previous year. It ranked 7th out of 17 prefecture-level cities in the province.
The secondary sector, the largest contributor to the city's economy, gained value-added output of RMB 80.93 billion in 2010, accounting for 61.7% of Anyang's GDP. The value-added output from the service sector reached RMB 34.29 billion, comprising 26.2% of the city's economy. The agricultural sector realized RMB 15.91 billion in value-added output, making up 12.1% of the city's economy.
The value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size or above in Anyang paced up 19.7% to RMB 64.82 billion in 2010. Value-added industrial output from heavy industrial enterprises with designated size and above rose 20.5% year on year to RMB 50.94 billion, which is 78.58% of Anyang's total, while that from the light industry climbed up 16.7% to RMB 13.88 billion, accounting for 21.42% of the city's total.
Metallurgy is the largest pillar industry in Anyang. Value-added industrial output from metallurgy amounted to RMB 20.97 billion in 2010, accounting for 32.35% of the city's total value-added industrial output from the enterprises with designated size and above. Transportation equipment manufacturing, coking, coal mining and dressing, non-metal product manufacturing, equipment manufacturing, agricultural products processing, tobacco, textile, and electricity and heat production and supply, which are also the pillar industries in the city, generated totally RMB 31.44 billion in value-added industrial output, making up 48.5% of the city's total.
Anyang Steel & Iron, a listed company in Shanghai Stock Exchange, is a major steelmaker in Henan Province. In the first half of 2010, the sales revenue and net profit of the company stood at RMB 13.5 billion and RMB 50.37 million in the same period, respectively.
Plentiful tourism resources in Anyang make the city a hot tourist destination in Henan Province. In 2010, over 18.85 million tourists visited the city. The tourism income in the city surpassed RMB 12.73 billion in 2010.
In 2010, foreign trade value in Anyang increased 66.9% to US$1.57 billion. The export value in the city increased 57.5% to US$440 million, while import value in the city increased 71.5% to US$1.13 billion.
In 2010, Anyang actually utilized FDI of US$150 million, representing an increase of 26.6% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Anyang enjoys profound history and splendid cultures. In BC1300, Pan Geng, the emperor of Shang Dynasty moved its capital to Yin, which is now a part of Anyang. Over 150,000 oracles were discovered in 1989. Simuwu Rectangle Ding (Si Mu Wu Da Fang Ding), a large four-legged bronze vessel, was also unearthed in this region. It is the largest bronze article in the world. Anyang got its current name in BC257 during the Warring States Period. In 1952, Anyang City was set up as a prefecture-level city in Henan Province.
Yu Opera, also known as "Henan Bangzi" or "Henan High Tune", is popular in Anyang. Yu Opera is well-known for its strong rhythms, high tunes and intensive uses of spoken language.
Tourist Attraction
Anyang is noted for the Yin Ruins discovered in the region. Yin refers to the present-day Xiaodun Village, where Shang Dynasty set up its capital. The ruins, covering an area of 24 sq km, are famous for the discovery of oracle-bonds inspirations, bronze vessels and jades. Tourists should also visit Grand Taihang Canyon, Gaoge Temple, Wenfeng Pagoda, Lingquan Temple Pagoda and Yuefei Temple. Grand Taihang Canyon is situated at the east side of the southern Taihang Mountain. It is noted for the spectacular peaks, cliffs, gorges and great many waterfalls.
The city offers great number of delicious local snacks, such as Daokou Braised Chicken, Laomiao Beef (a kind of braised beef) and Sesame Candy (a kind of crispy candy made of white sesame).
