Hengyang is seated in the central-southern part of Hunan Province, at the middle reaches of Xiang River and to the south of Mount Hengshan. It borders Zhuzhou to the east, Chenzhou to the south, Shaoyang to the west and Xiangtan to the north. It covers an area of 15,310 sq km, occupying 7.2% of Hunan's total land area. It enjoys a subtropical maritime monsoon climate. The average temperature in Hengyang is about 18.2°C.
Hengyang is one of the 45 highway hubs in China. The Beijing-Zhuhai Highway, the Hengyang-Kunming Highway and the Hengyang-Dapu intersect in Hengyang, while State Highway 107 and State Highway 322 run through the city. It is also a major railway hub in Hunan. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing-Guangzhou-Hong Kong Express Railway and the Xiangtan-Guilin Railway connect the city with other cities throughout China.
Hengyang is reputed as a "Town of Non-ferrous Metal", a "Town of Non-metal Mineral Resources" and a "Land of Rice and Meat", because of its rich mineral resources and abundant agricultural products. It is rich in lead, zinc, copper and kaolin. It is also rich in medicinal herbs, such as white peony.
Economic Features
In 2010, Hengyang's GDP reached RMB 142 billion, growing 15.1% from the previous year. Its ranked fourth out of 14 in the province after Changsha, Yueyang and Changde.
Primary industry gained RMB 26.44 billion in value-added output in 2010, comprising 18.6% of Hengyang's total. It produced 3.34 million tons of crops, up 10% year on year.
Secondary industry, the largest contributor to the Hengyang's economy, generated value-added output of RMB64.57 billion in 2010, contributing 45.5% to Hengyang's GDP. The value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size or above rose 23.8% from the previous year to RMB 53.86 billion in 2010.
Heavy industrial enterprises and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized value-added industrial output of RMB 40.95 billion and RMB 12.91 billion, accounting for 76% and 24% of the city's total, respectively.
Metallurgy, coal mining and dressing, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products processing and textiles constitute the major industries in the city. Examples of leading companies in the pillar industries include Qinghua Ziguang Guhan Biological Pharmacy, Hengyang Valin Steel Tube and Gold Fruit.
Qinghua Ziguang Guhan Biological Pharmacy, set up in 1956, is the largest pharmaceuticals producer and supplier in Hunan. The company was listed in Shenzhen stock exchange on Jan. 1996. In the first half of 2010, the operating revenue amounted to RMB 128.35 million, while the net loss reached RMB 0.78 million.
Hengyang Valin Steel Tube, a leading specialized seamless steel pipe producer in China, was founded in 1958 and it is a subsidiary of Hunan Valin Steel. It is capable of producing 400,000 tons of steel pipes annually.
The service sector, an important pillar of Hengyang's economy, realized value-added output of RMB 51.02 billion in 2010, making up 35.9% of the city's GDP. The city has a booming consumer market. Its sales of consumer goods soared 19.2% to RMB 47.2 billion, ranking fourth out of 14 cities in Hunan, following Changsha, Yueyang and Changde.
In 2010, the foreign trade value in the city increased 03.% to US$788 million, comprising US$705 million in export value and US$82 million in import value. Steel tube, silver products, iron products and lead are the major export products from the city.
The utilized FDI in Hengyang amounted to US$406 million in 2010, up 12.4% year on year. About US$358 million of the utilized FDI have been invested in the industrial sector.
Cultural Highlights
Hengyang's history can be traced back to over 5,000 years ago. During the Warring States Period, Hengyang was controlled by Chu State. The region was administrated by Changcha Shire during the Qin Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Hengyang Shire was set up in the territory.
Hengyang is the birthplace of many famous historical figures, such as the great poets Du Fu and Han Yu.
Tourist Attraction
Hengyang is known for Mount Hengshan Scenic Spot. Mount Hengshan, also known as "Longevity Mountain", is a holy place for Buddhists and Taoists. It contains many historical and cultural sites, including Sutra Collection Hall, Nanyue Temple, Dayu Stele, Fangguang Temple and Huixian Bridge. Travelers should also visit Yueping Park, Qingcao Bridge, and Han Brick in Qidong County, Leiyang Old Town. Leiyang Old Town is the birthplace of Cai Lun, the inventor of paper.
Hunan Cuisine, one of China's most famous cuisines, dominates Hengyang. Local dishes, such as Yu Lin Xiang Yao (made of fish balls, pig's kidneys and vegetables), He Ye Bao Fan (rice wrapped in lotus leaf) and Snow-Flake Cake are strongly recommended.
