Introduction
 
Zhoukou, a prefecture-level city in eastern part of Henan Province, neighbors Zhumadian to the southwest, Xuchang and Luohe to the west, Kaifeng to the northwest, Shangqiu to the northeast, and Anhui Province to the east. It has a population of 10.04 million, ranking second in Henan, after Nanyang. Zhoukou covers an area of 11,988 sq km, occupying 7.2% of Henan's total land area.

The transportation in Zhoukou is convenient. It is located west of the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. The Xuchang-Chancheng Railway and the Luohe-Fuyang Railway go through the city, connect the city with most cities in Henan Province. The Zhoukou-Luohe Highway, linked with the Beijing-Zhuhai Highway to the west and the Zhoukou-Jieshou Highway to the east, runs across city.

The city enjoys a warm, temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature in the city is about 15°C.
 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, GDP of Zhoukou amounted to RMB 122.79 billion, representing a stable growth of 11.1% over the previous year. It ranked seventh among the 17 prefecture-level cities in the province. Private sectors accounted for 60.6% of the city's GDP.

The secondary sector contributed most to the city's economy, with an added-value of RMB 55.79 billion, taking a proportion of 45.4% of the city's GDP in 2010. The agricultural sector in Zhoukou is rather strong and it constituted 29.8% of the city's GDP. Meanwhile, the service sector contributed 24.8% to the city's GDP. The added value of the primary and service industry amounted to RMB 36.56 billion and RMB 30.44 billion.

Zhoukou is rich in agricultural resources, such as crops, melons and jujubes. The output of grain amounted to 7.24 million tons, up 1.0% year on year

The value-added industrial output of enterprises with designated size and above in the city soared 21.7% year on year to RMB 36.39 billion in 2010. Light industry maintains a leading position in the city's industrial sector. Value-added industrial output from light industry and heavy industry amounted to RMB 26.29 billion and RMB 10.1 billion in 2010, composing 72.75% and 27.75% of the city's total value-added industrial output from enterprises with designated size and above.

Food products processing, textile, and pharmaceuticals are the major industries in Zhoukou. Examples of large industrial enterprises include Henan Longyuan Wove Paper Industrial and Henan Lianhua Monosodium Glutamate. Henan Longyuan Wove Paper was established in Zhoukou in 2000. It is the largest packaging paper producer in Henan.

Henan Lianhua Monosodium Glutamate is engaged in monosodium glutamate, grade flour, wheat gluten powder and other agricultural products. In the first half of 2010, the operating revenue and net profit amounted to RMB 1.3 billion and RMB 180.3 million, respectively.

Zhoukou has booming consumer market. In 2010, sales of consumer goods in Zhoukou paced up 18.9% from a year earlier to RMB 48.38 billion, ranking seventh among the 17 prefecture-level cities in Henan Province.

The foreign trade value in Zhoukou amounted to US$384 million in 2010, increased 18.4% compared with 2009. The export value reached US$176 million, up 28.7% year on year. Agricultural products, textiles and garments and leather products are the major export products from Zhoukou.

In 2010, actually utilized FDI of Zhoukou reached US$157.63 million, growing 39% from 2009.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zhoukou has a history of over 6,000 years. It is one of the birthplaces of Chinese nation. It is said that Fu Xi, ancestor of Chinese nation and an ancient emperor, set up its capital city in Chenzhou, which became current Zhoukou. It was also capital city of the Chu State during the Warring State Period. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Zhoukou was an important commercial and trade area in central China.

The region is also taken as an important birthplace of the Yellow River Culture. The Yellow River Culture, originating from the Yellow River region, is considered cradle of Chinese civilization.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Long history and splendid culture endow Zhoukou with diverse historical and cultural sites, such as Guandi Temple, Fuxi Taihao Mausoleum and Taiqing Palaces. Guandi Temple was first built in AD1693 in memorizing Guan Yu, a great general of the Three Kingdoms Period. After expansion and reconstruction for several times, Guandi Temple currently covers an area of 12,580 sq m. Fuxi Taihao Mausoleum, similar to the structure of the imperial palace of the Ming Dynasty, was first built during the Spring-and-Autumn Period.

Zhoukou offers various characteristic local dishes. The most popular local dishes in the city are Hu La Tang (a kind of spicy soup with vegetables, pork, eggs and other ingredients), Steaming Paozi, Mutton Soup and Five-Spiced Egg.
