Introduction
 

Zhumadian, a prefecture-level city in the southern part of Henan Province, is adjacent to Nanyang to the west, Zhoukou, Pingdingshan and Luohe to the north, Xinyang to the south and Anhui Province to the east. Covering an area of 15,083 sq km, the city is the fourth largest city out of 17 in Henan Province, following Nanyang, Xinyang and Luoyang. It has a population of 7.7 million, of which the Han nationality composes 99.9%.

The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing-Shenzhen Highway, the Arongqi-Shenzhen Highway, the Xincai-Biyang Highway, State Highway 106 and State Highway 107 connect Zhumadian with most major cities throughout China. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, 100 km north of Zhumadian, offers regular flights to over 20 domestic cities and as well as chart flights to South Korea and Thailand.

Zhumadian features a continental monsoon climate, with rich sunshine and rainfalls. The average temperature in the city is about 15℃. The city is rich in kalium, coal and oil reserves. Its kalium reserves top 168,700 tons, ranking first in China. It has more than 1 billion tons of coal reserves and 19.1 million tons of oil reserves.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, Zhumadian's GDP grew 11.6% from a year earlier to RMB 105.55 billion, ranking 11th out of 17 in the province. Primary industry, secondary industry and tertiary industry constituted 27.5%, 41.8% and 30.7% of the city's economy, respectively.

Value-added output from the agricultural sector exceeded RMB 29.07 billion in 2010, rising 4.7% from a year earlier. It is a major crop and oil plant planting area in Henan. In 2009, it produced 6.7 million tons of crops and 0.93 million tons of edible oil plants, down 8.7% and up 6.5% year on year, respectively.

Total value-added industrial output from secondary industry in Zhumadian hit RMB 44.13 billion in 2010, representing a growth of 14.8% from a year earlier. The value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above soared 21.5% to RMB 27.99 billion.

Value-added industrial output from heavy industry and light industry amounted to RMB 14.5 billion and RMB 13.5 billion in 2010, composing 52% and 48% of the city's total value-added industrial output from enterprises with designated size and above.

Non-metal product manufacturing, agricultural products processing, food manufacturing, textiles, leather products, wood and wood product processing, raw chemicals and chemical products, and electricity and heat production and supply are the main industries in the city. In 2010, value-added industrial output from enterprises with designated size and above in these major industries accounted for more than 75% of the city's total.

Zhumadian CIMC Huajun Vehicle is the largest industrial enterprise in the city. The company was jointly set up by China International Marine Container (CMIC) and the former Zhumadian Huajun Vehicles in 2004. It is capable of producing 20,000 semi-tractors and 50,000 tons of refitting products. In 2009, the sales revenue and net profit of the company amounted to RMB 20.5 billion and RMB 959 million, decreased 56.74% and 31.84% year on year, respectively.

The service sector realized over RMB 32.35 billion in value-added output in 2010, with a stable growth of 12.6% from a year earlier. Tourism is an important pillar of the city's service sector. Over 8.37 million tourists visited the city in 2010, which brought a total tourism income of RMB 2.77 billion, increasing by 47.9% from 2009.

The foreign trade value in the city increased 66% year on year to US$231.99 million in 2010, comprising US$178.22 million in export value and US$53.77 million in import value. Agricultural products, textile and garments are the major export products from the city.

The city attracted contractual FDI of US$416.20 million in 2010, up 20% year on year, while the utilized FDI in the city surpassed US$125.5 million, with a rise of 50%. Sumitomo from Japan and Chia Tai Group from Thailand, both of which are large multinational companies, have launched businesses in the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Zhumadian enjoys a long history of 18,000 years. Several administrative agents, including Cai, Lu, Shen and Jiang vassal states, were set up in the region during the Zhou Dynasty. Until 221BC during the Qin Dynasty, the independent regimes ended and several counties were established.

Many famous figures came from the region, including Li Si, a prime minister of Qin Dynasty, and Fan Zhen, great philosopher of the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The famous story "Love of Two Butterflies" (Liang Zhu) took place in this area.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Zhumadian has many historical and cultural sites as well as natural scenic spots, including Nanhai Temple, the largest temple in Asia. Nanhai Temple, located in Runan County, was built during the Ming Dynasty and reconstructed in 1992. Chaya Mountain and Tongshan Mountain are famed for their beautiful scenery and wonderful landscapes. Chaya Mountain Park is a state-level geological park, composing of 5 scenic spots. It has diverse strange stones and crags and splendid mountain scenery.

Travelers can taste Re Gan Noodle (Hot and Dry Noodle) in Zhumadian, which has a different flavor from Wuhan. Re Gan Noodle, a typical breakfast in Zhumadian, is made of soda-based noodles, various sauces and dried vegetables.
