Introduction
 

Luohe, a prefecture-level city in the central part of Henan Province, borders Xuchang to the north, Zhoukou to the east, Zhumadian to the south and Pingdingshan to the West. It covers an area of 2,617 sq km and has a population of 2.5 million. It enjoys a warm temperate continental monsoon climate. The average temperature in Luohe is about 15°C.

The city has an ideal geographic location. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway runs through Luohe, making it a transport hub for coals from Pingdingshan, the largest coal base in Henan Province. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, which provides daily flights to over 20 domestic cites, is located 140 km north of Luohe.

Luohe is rich in freshwater and rock salt resources. The Shahe River, the Lihe River and the Yihe River traverse the city. Rock salt, mainly distributed in Wuyang County, covers an area of 80 sq km and its reserves amount to nearly 40 billion tons.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, GDP of Luohe hit RMB 68.2 billion, representing a strong growth of 14.7% over the previous year. However, it was still small in Henan Province. It ranked 15th among the 17 prefecture-level cities in the province. Private sectors have value-added outputs of RMB 42.28 accounting for 62% of the city's GDP. Primary industry, secondary industry and tertiary industry composed 12.9%, 69.6% and 17.5% of the city's GDP, respectively.

Value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above reached RMB 39.5 billion in 2010, up 20.3% year on year. Light industry maintained a dominant position in 2010. Value-added output from light industry and heavy industry rose 19.1% and 23.4% to RMB 28.12 billion and RMB 11.38 billion, comprising 71.2% and 28.8% of the city's total, respectively.

Food manufacturing, and paper making constitute the pillar industries in the city. Value-added industrial output from the two pillars amounted to RMB 21.03 billion and RMB 3.05 billion accounting for 53.3% and 8.8% of the industrial sector.

Luohe is a food and beverages production hub in China. Over 6,000 enterprises in the city are engaged in this industry. It is home to large food and beverages makers such as Shineway Group, Nanjiecun Group and Henan Longyun Group.

Shineway Group was established in Henan in 1958. It is the largest meat processor in China in terms of sales revenue in 2009. Its major products covered frozen meat, sausage, hams and other meat deep processing products. It is capable of manufacturing of 1.5 million tons of meat. Shineway Development, the listed company of the group, has sales revenue and net profits of RMB 16.6 billion and RMB 464 million in the first half of 2010, rose 27.82% and 27.54% year on year.

Service sector, also an important contributor to Luohe's economy, realized RMB 11.93 billion in value-added output in 2010, up 10.5% year on year. Wholesaling and retailing is a pillar of the service sector. Sales of consumer goods in the city increased 18.4% to RMB 21.63 billion.

Foreign trade value in Luohe rose 39.6% from 2009 to US$391.88 million in 2010. Export value was US$153.97 million, up 32.8% year on year, while the import value stood at US$237.91 million, up 44.4% from the previous year. Agricultural products such as pork are the major export products from Luohe.

Luohe actually utilized FDI of US$323.15 million in 2010, representing a rise of 29.4% from a year earlier. The city attracted investment from many large companies. Private equity fund of Goldman Sacks acquired 25% of Shineway Development, the Hong Kong-listed unit of Shineway Group, in 2006.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Luohe's history stretches back to 8,000 years ago, when human settlers started living in this region. In AD1540 during the Ming Dynasty, Luowanhe County was set up in the territory. It was called Luohe until 1912.

The city has rich well-preserved traditional cultures, such as Shahe Melody, Wuyang Peasants Painting, Lion Dance. Shahe Melody is one of the four genres of Yu Opera, which features high tune, strong rhythms and intensive uses of spoken language.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Luohe is famous for Dagang Relics and Bi An Temple Stele. Datong Relics, located in Wuyang County of Luohe, has rich relics of the Neolithic Age and Han Dynasty. The Bone Flute, the earliest discovery of music instrument in China, was unearthed in the Datong Relics. Bi'an Temple, situated in Yancheng County, was first built during the Tang Dynasty. The most renowned historical sites in Bi'an Temple are the 12.18-meter-high Bi'an Temple Scripture Pillars, or the Dragon Tower Ancient Seal Character Motif. The sculpture on the pillars were written in ancient seal characters and told about the history of Bi'an Temple.

The local snacks in the city are diverse and abundant. Snacks such as Fancheng Beefu, Laopo Chicken (a kind of braised chicken) and Regan Noodle (slippery thick and hard noodles) are the favorites of the local people.
