Introduction
 

Puyang lies in the northeastern part of Henan Province, at the lower reaches of the Yellow River. The city adjoins Liaocheng, Jining and Heze, three prefecture-level cities in Shandong Province, to the northeast, east and south, respectively. It borders Xinxiang to the southwest, Anyang to the west and Handan of Hebei Province to the north.

Situated at the intersection of Henan, Shandong and Hebei provinces, Puyang serves as a transportation hub in northeastern Henan Province. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway, and the Tangying-Taiqian Railway, running through the city,  makes the city easily accessible by rail. The Puyang-Hebi Highway, connected with the Beijing-Fuzhou Highway in the east and the Beijing-Zhujiang Highway to the west, links the city with Beijing, Fuzhou, Zhujiang and other major cities. Though there is no airport in Puyang, Handan Airport, Jining Qufu Airport and Zhengzhou Xinzheng Airport are located merely 200 km from the city. 

Puyang covers an area of 4,266 sq km and has a population of 3.5 million. It bears a warm, temperate continental monsoon climate. The city is rich in gas, coal and oil resources. The demonstrated natural gas reserves in the city are about 200-300 billion cubic meters, while the coal reserves in the city surpass 80 billion tons.

 
Economic Features
 
Puyang's economy is relative small compared with other prefecture-cities in Henan Province. In 2010, the city's GDP surged 11.4% from the previous year to RMB 77.48 billion, ranking fourteenth out of 17 in Henan.

The value-added output from the agricultural sector rose 4.7% from a year earlier to RMB 10.76 billion in 2010, comprising 13.9% of Puyang's GDP. The secondary industry, the main sector of economy, generated RMB 51.53 billion in value-added output, contributing 66.5% to the city's economy. The tertiary industry realized RMB 15.18 billion in value-added output, accounting for 19.6% of the city's economy.

The total value-added industrial output in Puyang reached RMB 47.64 billion in 2010, while that from the enterprises with designated size and above grew 15.2% year to RMB 42.6 billion. Heavy industry and light industry gained value-added industrial output of RMB 23.43 billion and RMB 19.17 billion, making up 55% and 45% of that from the city, respectively.

Petrochemicals, agricultural product processing, non-mental product manufacturing, chemicals, electrical machinery, plastic, textile, paper-making are the major industries of the city. In 2009, the value-added industrial output of the pillar industries amounted to RMB 31.06 billion, accounting for 72.9% of the industrial sector.

The city is a production base of petroleum, petrochemicals and chemicals in Henan Province. The value-added industrial output from petrochemicals industry amounted to RMB 7.5 billion, accounting for 21.7% of the industrial sector. It is home to Sinopec Puyang Company, a unit under Sinopec, and Puyang Refractories Group Co Ltd (PRCO).

PRCO is a leading refractory manufacturer and supplier in China. It was first set up as Puyang County Refractories Factory in 1988 and reconstructed into PRCO in 2007. The company was listed on Shenzhen stock exchange on April 2008. In the first half of 2010, the operating revenue and net profit of the company amounted to RMB 730 million and RMB 64.2 million, respectively. 

In 2010, more than 3.14 million tourists have visited the city, up 10.1% year on year. The tourism income rose 15.2% to RMB 435 million.

Foreign trade value in Puyang up 22.9% from a year earlier to RMB 488 million in 2010, comprising US$415 million in export value and US$73 million in import value. Export value of mechanical and electronic products hit US$150 million, constituting 46.4% of the city's total export value.

Puyang actually utilized FDI of US$90 million in 2010, featuring a strong growth of 19.9% from the previous year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Puyang's has a long history. It was called Diqiu in ancient times. In BC660 during the Spring-and-Autumn Period (770BC-476BC), Wei State set the region its capital. It had been the political, economic and cultural city of the Wei State for hundred years. It was named Puyang during the Warring States, as it is located in the north of the Pu River. Puyang was set up as a prefecture-level city in Henan Province in 1984.

The city is a birthplace of Chinese dragon culture. The first depiction of a Chinese dragon, which was piled with mussel shells about 6,400 years ago, was discovered in Xishuipo of Puyang in 1987. Puyang is also an important part of Yangshao Culture, which was prevailing over 6,000 years ago.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Puyang has rich tourism resources, including historical sites, such as Qicheng City Ruins, Cangjie Mausoleum, Puzhao Temple and Si Pailou (Archway), and natural scenic spots, such as Maolou Ecological Tourist Zone. Qicheng City Ruins, also known as Longkui City, is reputed for the 1,520-meter-long ancient city wall of the Wei Kingdom during the Spring-and-Autumn Period and abundant historic relics of Yangshao Cultures, Warring-States Period and Han Dynasties. Cangjie Mausoleum, consisting of the Cangjie Tomb, the Changjie Temple and large number of stone inscriptions, were built to memorize Cangjie, a great official in charge of word formation iduring the Emperor Huangdi Period.

The city offers diverse local snacks, among which the most popular are Zhuang Mo (a kind of fried pancake), Mutton Soup and Puyang Braised Chicken.
