Introduction
 

Sanmenxia, a prefecture-level city in the western part of Henan Province, is famed for the Sanmenxia Dam, the first dam on the Yellow River, which was constructed in 1960. The city is adjacent to Luoyang to the east, Nanyang to the southeast, Shaanxi Province to the west and Shanxi Province to the north. It covers an area of 10,475 sq km, occupying 6.3% of Henan's total land area. It has a semi-dry temperate continental climate.

The city enjoys convenient railway and highway transportation. The Lianyungang-Lanzhou Railway, State Highway 310, State Highway 209 and the Luoyang-Sanmenxia Highway connect the city with most cities in the mainland.  Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, within 1.5-hour drive from Sanmengxia's downtown area, makes Sanmenxia also easily accessible by air.

Sanmenxia is rich in mineral resources such as gold, bauxite and coal. The proven gold reserves and coal reserves in the city hit 360 tons and 2.7 billion tons, respectively. Sanmenxia Hydro Power Plant guarantees the electricity supply in the city.

 
Economic Features
 
Sanmenxia's GDP grew 15.2% from a year earlier to RMB 87.43 billion in 2010, ranking 12th out of 17 in Henan.

The secondary industry, the strongest sector, generated RMB 59.92 billion in value-added output, contributing 68.5% of the city's GDP. Value-added output from the tertiary industry rose 11.1% to RMB 20.52 billion in 2010, making up 23.5% of the city's GDP, while that from the primary industry increased by 4.7% to RMB 7 billion, making up 8% of the city's GDP.

Value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above soared 21.1% from the previous year to RMB 50.69 billion. The industrial sector is dominated by heavy industry. Heavy industry and light industry achieved value-added industrial output of RMB 47.65 billion and RMB 3.04 billion, accounting for 94% and 6% of the city's total, respectively.

Non-ferrous metal ore mining, Non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry, Non-metallic mineral products industry, Raw Chemical Materials and Chemical Products, Electricity, Gas and Water Production and Supply, non-metal ore mining, Special Equipment manufacturing, General equipment manufacturing, and Food and Beverage manufacturing are the pillar industries in Sanmenxia. The combined value-added industrial output amounted to RMB 44.98 billion, accounting for 88.7% of the industrial sector.

Sanmenxia hosts large companies like Sanmenxia Tianyuan Aluminum<8253> and Datang Sanmenxia Power Plant. Sanmenxia Tianyuan Aluminum is a Hong Kong-listed company specializing in the manufacture of aluminum products. In the first half of 2010, the sales revenue stood at RMB 661.37 billion and net loss of RMB11.82 million.

Sanmenxia is a popular tourism destination in Henan Province. In 2010, more than 12.23 million tourists have visited the city, while the tourism income rose to RMB 8.96 billion.

The foreign trade value in Sanmenxia increased 20.4% from the previous year to RMB 163.32 million in 2010 ranking 16th among 17 prefecture-level cities in Henan Province. The export value amounted to US$103.55 million, representing an increase of 28.2% year on year. The import value rose 9% to US$59.77 million. Aluminum products, coal and mechanical and electronic products are the major export products from Sanmenxia.

Sanmenxia attracted foreign contractual investments of US$249.45 million in 2010, increased 98.2% year on year, while the utilized FDI in the city was US$398.49 million, up 51.2% year on year.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Sanmenxia is one of the birthplaces of Chinese cultures. It has diverse cultures such as Yangshao Culture, Guo State Culture and Taoism Culture. Yangshao Culture was prevailing between 5,000-3,000BC. Guo State Culture originated from Guo State during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1100-770BC).

The city got its current name from a legendary, which said Yu, an ancient hero of controlling torrential flood, split a high mountain into "Ren Men", "Shen Men" and "Gui Men" three gorges. During the Xia and Shang Dynasties (2100BC-1100BC), Sanmenxia was a commercial and political center. In 1986, Sanmenxia was promoted to be a prefecture-level city in Henan.

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Sanmenxia has rich tourism resources. Sanmenxia Dam Scenic Area, 30 km from the city center, is the first hydro project on the Yellow River. Tourists can enjoy splendid scenery of the Yellow River at the Dam. Hangu Pass is a building complex constructed during the Spring-and-Autumn Period. It was an important pass between Luoyang and Chang'an in ancient time. It is also an important Taoism site, where the founder of Taoism wrote his masterpiece of "Tao Te Ching" (Dao De Jing in Chinese). Sanmenxia is famed as a "swan's paradise". Each year, thousands of swans migrate from Siberia and winter in the city.

People traveling to Sanmenxia will also enjoy the various local snacks there. Sanmenxia Ma Hua (fried dough twist) and Guanyintang Beef (braised beef) are highly recommendable.
