Located in eastern part of Henan Province, Shangqiu neighbors Kaifeng to the northwest, Zhoukou to the southwest, Shandong Province to the northeast and Anhui Province to the southeast. It covers an area of 10,704 sq km and has a population of 8.3 million. The city enjoys a warm temperate climate. The average temperature in the city is about 14°C.
Shangqiu is a large railway transportation hub second to Zhenghzou, the capital city of Henan. Regular trains from Shangqiu Railway Station and Shangqiu South Railway Station link Shangqiu with most cities throughout China. It also has well-established highway network, as State Highway 105, State Highway 310, the Jinan-Guangzhou Highway and the Lianyungang-Hoerguosi Highway intersect in the city. Shangqiu is 200 km from Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport and 140 km from Xuzhou Guanyin Airport.
The city is rich in agricultural products like wheat, corn, beans and cotton, as well as large reserves of coal. Yongxia Coal Field has demonstrated coal reserves of 10 billion tons.
Economic Features
Shangqiu’s GDP exceeded RMB 103.3 billion in 2009, representing a steady growth of 11.2% over the previous year. It ranked tenth among 17 prefecture-level cities in Henan.
Agricultural sector plays an important role in Shangqiu’s economy. The value-added output from agricultural sector grew 4.2% to RMB 27.1 billion in 2009, contributing 26.2% to the city’s GDP. It produced 6.1 million tons of crops in 2009, up 4.1% year on year.
The secondary sector realized value-added output of RMB 46.2 billion in 2009, comprising 44.7% of Shangqiu’s economy. The value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above rose 13.3% to RMB 29.1 billion. Heavy industry and light industry got RMB 18.2 billion and RMB 10.9 billion in value-added industrial output, composing 62.5% and 37.5% of the city’s total, respectively.
Coal mining and dressing, agricultural products processing, metallurgy, electricity and heat production and supply, food and beverages, textiles and paper making etc are the pillar industries in Shangqiu. Their value-added industrial output of the pillar industries amounted to RMB 24.5 billion in 2009, constituting 84% of the city’s total.
Shangqiu hosts large industrial enterprises like Yongcheng Coal of Henan Coal and Chemical Industry Group, Linhe Brewery, Shangqiu Hongfu Food and Hongguang Pharmaceuticals.
Yongcheng Coal, inaugurated in 1997, merged with Pingdingshan Coal and other 4 coal producers into Henan Coal and Chemical Industry Group in 2007. Linhe Brewery is a major distilled liquor producer in Henan Province. It has annual liquor production capacity of 50,000 tons.
The service sector in Shangqiu realized value-added output of RMB 30.1 billion in 2009, taking a 29.1% proportion of the city’s GDP. The consumer market in the city is relatively small. Sales of consumer goods in the city grew 19.3% year on year to RMB 34.3 billion in 2009.
In 2009, the city’s foreign trade value hit US$124.5 million, up 16.3% from the previous year. Export value rose 11.1% year on year to US$89 million. The import value was US$35.5 million, up 31.5% year on year. Mechanical and electronic products, agricultural products and metal products are the major export products in the city.
Shangqiu attracted contractual foreign investments of US$139.36 million in 2009, with a rise of 2% from a year earlier. The utilized FDI in the city surpassed US$84.3 million, up 38% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Shangqiu is one of the birthplaces of Chinese nation. It is considered the place in China where the first fire was lit by human beings. As early as 10,000 years ago, the Suiren Tribe lit there. It is the origin place of Shanghai Culture and trade. About 4,000 years ago, Shang tribes had a booming agriculture and they started trading their products. So later the businessmen were called "Shang Ren" in Chinese and the appellation has been kept until now.
Shangqiu became the capital city of Shang Dynasty (1600-1100BC) after the first emperor defeated Xia (2100-1600BC). The region was an assistant capital of the Northern Song Dynasty (AD960-1127). In 1997, Shangqiu was set as a prefecture-level city of Henan Province.
Tourist Attraction
There are many cultural and historical relics in Shangqiu, including the Ancient City and the Han Tombs of Mangdang Mountain. The Ancient City is a well-preserved old town dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It contains many great traditional residential houses and courtyards of the Ming Dynasty. The Han Tombs of Mangdang Mountain, situated in Yongcheng, is a collection of large imperial tombs of King Liang. The Jade Clothes Sewn with Gold Threads (Jin Lu Yu Yi) and the impressive mural painting were discovered in the tombs. Tourists should also visit the Baiyun Temple, the Diku Mausoleum and the Ebo Platform.
Tourists in Shangqiu will also enjoy the characteristic local snacks. The most popular snacks there include Shui Ji Mo (steamed bread) of Guide, Five-Spiced Fish, Jingjia Ma Hua (fried dough twist) and Tie Guo Dan (fried egges with ham, shrimp and chufa).
