Kaifeng, reputed as “The Capital of Seven Dynasties”, is a renowned cultural and historical city in Henan Province. Lying in eastern Henan Province, along the southern bank of the Yellow River, it is adjacent to the provincial capital Zhengzhou to the west, Xinxiang to the northwest, Shangqiu to the east, Zhoukou to the southeast, Xuchang to the southwest and Shandong Province to the northeast.
The city enjoys convenient transportation. Regular trains from Kaifeng Railway Station connect the city with most major cities in mainland China. State Highway 106 (Beijing-Guangzhou), State Highway 310 (Tianshui-Lianyungang) and State Highway 220 (Kaifeng-Binzhou) run through the city. The city is merely 70 km from Zhengzhou International Airport, which operates flights to most cities in mainland China as well as to Hong Kong and Bangkok.
Kaifeng has a temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. It is rich in mineral resources, such as oil, natural gas and coal. The city has 560 million tons of oil reserves, 48.5 billion steres of natural gas reserves and 7.8 billion tons of coal reserves. The city, a hot tourist spot in Henan, is also rich in historical and cultural sites.
Economic Features
In 2010, GDP of Kaifeng grew 12.6% to RMB 93.02 billion. The agricultural sector gained value-added output of RMB 21.93 billion in 2010, accounting for 23.6% of the city's economy. It produced 2.56 million tons of crops, up 0.8% year on year.
Secondary industry, the major contributor to Kaifeng's economy, generated RMB 40.06 billion in value-added output in 2010, contributing 43.1% to the city's GDP. The value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above rose 21.6% to RMB 27.63 billion. Value-added industrial output from heavy industrial and light industrial enterprises with designated size and above soared 21.9% and 21.3% to RMB 15.3 billion and RMB 12.3 billion in 2010, comprising 55.5% and 44.5% of that from the city, respectively.
Machinery, pharmaceuticals, raw chemicals and chemical products, textiles and agricultural products processing are the pillar industries in the city.
China Valves Technology, headquartered in Kaifeng, is the only listed company in Kaifing. It is listed in Nasdaq. It is engaged in the manufacture of metal valves used in the electricity, petroleum, chemical and metal industries. In the first half of 2010, the sales revenue and net profit of the company amounted to US$49.26 million and US$14.3 million, respectively.
The service sector is also a large contributor to Kaifeng's economy. In 2010, the value-added output from the service sector rose 14.5% to RMB 31.03 billion, which is 33.3% of the city's GDP. Tourism is an important pillar of the city's service sector. In 2010, over 34.69 million tourists visited the city and brought tourism revenue of RMB 12.8 billion.
The foreign trade value in the city rose 12.9% from the previous year to US$239.37 million in 2010, ranking the fourth smallest in the province. The export value exceeded US$188.01 million, up 16% year on year, while the import value was US$51.36 million, rose 2.6% year on year.
The city attracted over US$106.98 million foreign investment in 2010, representing an increase of 47% year on year, while the utilized FDI in the city hit US$128.82 million, up 71% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Kaifeng enjoys a profound history and splendid culture. It is one of the major centers of ancient civilization. It served as capital of the Kingdom of Wei (475BC-331BC), and of the Later Liang, Later Han and Later Zhou Dynasties of the Five Dynasties Period (AD907-960), the Northern Song Dynasty (AD960-1137) and the Jin Dynasty (AD1115-1334). Kaifeng became of a major commercial center during the seventh century, when it was connected to the Grand Canal.
Kaifeng is also known for the having the oldest Jewish community in China, which dates back to the Northern Song Dynasty.
Tourist Attraction
Kaifeng is rich in historical and cultural sites, among which the most famous is Da Xiang Guo Temple. It is a famous Buddhist temple first built in AD555. The Temple of Lord Bao is also famous. It was built to memorialize Bao Zheng, a great official during the Song Dynasty. Youguosi Pagoda (also known as Iron Pagoda) and the Astronomical Clock Tower of Susong (who was an engineer and scientist in ancient times) are two popular scenic spots in Kaifeng. Youguosi Pagoda, 54.7-meters high, was first constructed in AD1049 and became a landmark of Kaifeng. The Astronomical Clock Tower is known for its water-powered rotating sphere, the first of its kind.
Kaifeng has diverse local food specialties, such as Steaming Bun (dough stuffed with vegetables and shredded meat), dumplings and Wuxiang Shao Bing (five-spice pancake).
