Introduction
 

Pingdingshan is seated in the central part of Henan Province. It adjoins Zhengzhou, the provincial capital of Henan, to the north, Xuchang and Luohe to the east, Zhumadian to the southeast, Nanyang to the south and Luoyang to the West. It covers an area of 8,867 sq km and has a population of 5.0 million. The city enjoys a warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons.

Pingdingshan is a major coal production base in Henan Province. The demonstrated coal reserves in the city reach 10.3 billion tons, and are the largest in Henan Province. It is rich in freshwater resources, as 31 rivers go through the city.

The transportation in Pingdingshan is very convenient. Pingdingshan lies between the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Jiazuo-Zhicheng Railway, which construct a comprehensive railway network in the city. The Zhengzhou International Airport, Luoyang Airport and Nanyang Airport are located within 120 km of Pingdingshan, and provide over 100 weekly flights to over 20 domestic cities as well as to Hong Kong and Bangkok.

 
Economic Features
 
Pingdingshan is the fourth largest economy among the 17 prefecture-level cities in Henan Province in terms of GDP in 2009. The city’s GDP paced up 10% from a year earlier to RMB 112.5 billion.

The value-added output from the agricultural sector grew 4% from the previous year to RMB 10.5 billion in 2009, contributing 9.4% to Pingdingshan’s economy. The secondary sector, the largest sector in Pingdingshan, has generated value-added output of RMB 73.5 billion in 2009, constituting 65.3% of the city’s economy. The value-added sector from the service sector rose 11% year on year to RMB 28.4 billion, making up 25.3% of the city’s economy.

The value-added industrial output generated by enterprises with designated size and above grew 11.1% from a year ago to RMB 53.4 billion. Heavy industry and light industry gained value-added industrial output of RMB 46.7 billion and RMB 6.7 billion, making up 87.5% and 12.5% of that from the city, respectively.

Equipment manufacturing, raw chemicals and chemical products, non-metal mining, non-ferrous metallurgy, oil refining and coking are the major industries in the city. Pingdingshan hosts major industrial players, such as Pingdingshan Coal Mining Group, Shenma Industrial and Henan Pinggao Electric.

Pingdingshan Coal Mining Group is a large coal miner in China. It has over 35 coal mines in China. In 2009, the company has produced 25.34 million tons of coal, ranked 19th among Chinese coal producer. The net profits amounted to RMB 710 million. In the first eight month of 2010, it had coal production capacity of 20.04 million tons.

Shenma Industrial is a listed nylon products maker in Pingdingshan. It took up 30% of China's industrial filament market in 2009. In the first half of 2010, its operating revenue and net profit amounted to RMB 6.1 billion and RMB 29.95 million.

The consumer market was booming in 2009. The sales of consumer goods in Pingdingshan climbed up 20.4% to RMB 29.6 billion. The tourism industry is also an important pillar of the service sector. In 2009, more than 10.5 million tourists have visited the city, while the tourism revenue reached RMB 4.6 billion, representing a growth of 46% and 49% year on year, respectively.

The foreign trade value in the city was US$718.9 million in 2009, up 2.4% from the previous year. The export value reached US$282.65 million, with a decrease 46.9% year on year, while the import value stood at US$436.25 million, up 156.8%.

In 2009, Pingdingshan utilized FDI of US$140.4 million, up 12.3% year on year. By the end of 2009, there are 350 foreign invested enterprises in the city.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Pingdingshan, whose name means “flat mountain” in Chinese, derives its name from the flat mountain nearby. Pingdingshan’s history stretches back to about 8,000 years ago, when human beings started settling in this territory. Before the Zhou Dynasty (BC1100-221BC), the Ying and Jie Tribes lived in this region. During the Warring State Period (475BC-221BC), Pingdingshan was governed by several kingdoms. Pingdingshan was founded as a prefecture-level city in 1957, for the exploitation of the large coal ore reserves in the area. 

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Shiren Mountain and the Fengxue Temple are the top tourist attractions in Pingdingshan. Shiren Mountain, which was known as the Yaoshan Mountain in ancient times, is located west of Lushan County of Pingdingshan City. It consists of many strange stones, diverse waterfalls, springs, sea clouds, forests, rare animals and plants.

Fengxue Temple, also known as Wind Hole Temple, was first built during the Northern and Southern Dynasty (AD420-581). The temple comprises the Qizu Pagoda, the Bell Tower and the Buddha Hall, as well as a pagoda forest consisting of 83 pagodas. It is considered the second largest pagoda complex after the Shaolin Temple.

Pingdingshan offers a great many diverse delicate local dishes, such as Hui Mian (fried noodles) in Yexiang County, Braised Chicken of Jiaodian County and Crispy Pancake.
