Pingxiang, situated in the western part of Jiangxi Province, is adjacent to Yichun to the east, Ji'an to the south, Liling of Hunan Province to the west and Liuyang of Hunan Province to north. The city covers an area of 3,827 sq km, 93.7% of which is mountainous and hilly. It enjoys a humid subtropical monsoon climate, with abundant sunshine and rainfall. The average temperate in Pingxiang is about 17-18°C.
The city has a well-established transportation network. The Zhegan Railway (which runs from from Zhejiang to Jiangxi) runs through the city from the east to west, while State Highway 319 and State Highway 320 intersect in the city. Hurui Highway (which runs from Shanghai to Lijiang in Yunnan Province) goes across the city.
Pingxiang is rich in mineral resources, such as coal, iron, copper and limestone. The demonstrated coal reserves in the city reach 852 million tons, while the proven iron ore reserves in the city total 67.6 million tons.
Economic Features
In 2010, Pingxiang's GDP surpassed RMB 52.04 billion, featuring a growth of 14.3% from a year earlier. Its GDP ranked ninth among the 11 prefecture-level cities in Jiangxi Province. The private sectors were active in 2010, and its value-added output rose 16.9% to RMB 34.66 billion, contributing 66.6% of the city's GDP.
Secondary industry, the main sector in the city, realized value-added output of RMB 32.95 billion in 2010, contributing 63.3% of the city's economy. The service sector also contributed significantly to the city's economy. It generated value-added output of RMB 14.56 billion, accounting for 28.6% of the city's GDP. The primary sector, with value-added output of RMB 4.23 billion, comprised 8.1% of the city's GDP.
As an industrial city, Pingxiang gained value-added industrial output of RMB 30.27 billion in 2010, up 13.7% year on year. Heavy industry dominates the city's industrial sector. Value-added industrial output from heavy industrial and light industrial enterprises with designated size and above soared 21.7% and 28.4% from the previous year to RMB 20.37 billion and RMB 2.42 million in 2010, accounting for 89.38% and 10.62% of that from the city, respectively.
Coal mining and dressing, construction materials, metallurgy, machinery, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products processing constitute the main industries in the city. The value-added industrial output from the pillar industries amounted to RMB 19.53 billion in 2010, making up 86.5% of the city's total.
Pingxiang is a major coal and iron production base in Jiangxi Province. In 2010, the city produced 10.63 million tons of coal and 3.48 million tons of pig iron, respectively.
Pingxiang serves as headquarter to large industrial groups, such as Pingxiang Mining Group, Jiangxi Wuguan Industrial Group and Jiangxi Wuguan New Materials. Pingxiang Mining Group was set up in 1898 as Anyuan Coal Mine, and specializes in the production of coal and coke products, glass and glass products, equipment and construction materials. It has an annual production capacity of 212 containers of float glasses, being the largest float glass maker in Jiangxi Province.
In 2010, sales of consumer goods amounted to RMB 15.81 billion, up 19.2% year on year. During the year, more than 7.26 million tourists have visited the city, up 26% year on year. The tourism income rose 26.6% to RMB 4.69 billion.
The foreign trade value in the city rose 77.5% from the previous year to US$453 million. The export value amounted to US$448 million. In 2009, Pingxiang's utilized FDI reached US$154 million, increasing by 23.7% year on year. The city lacks investments from large international companies.
Cultural Highlights
Pingxiang enjoys a long history. It was successively governed by the Wu State and Chu State during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770BC-221BC). In AD267 during the Three Kingdoms period, Pingxiang County was set up in the territory. Its name was changed into Yuanzhou during the Tang Dynasty (AD618-907).
Pingxiang has enriched religious cultures. Local folk drama has incorporated an ancient ceremonial dance called the "nuo sacrifice" or "nuo ceremony", which was originally meant to drive away evil spirits and sickness.
Tourist Attraction
The most popular tourist destinations in Pingxiang are the Wugongshan National Geo-park and Yilong Cave. The Wugongshan National Geopark, surrounded by the Wugongshan Mountains, contains sub-alpine meadows, waterfalls and rare wild plants. Yilong Cave is a natural karst cave formed about 180 million years ago. It is famous for its 4.2-km-long grand cave and its 19-meter waterfall.
Tourists should try the tasty local snacks, such as bacon, honey wine and Hua Guo (the most characteristic local food, which is made of fruit and vegetables).
