Introduction
 

Yichun, seated in the northwestern part of Jiangxi Province, is adjacent to Hunan Province to the west, Ji'an to the south, Pingxiang to the southwest and Xinyu to the south. It covers an area of 18,669 sq km, of which 50% is forested and 35% is mountainous.

Located in a subtropical zone, Yichun enjoys a humid monsoon climate, with plentiful sunshine and abundant rainfall. The average temperature in the city is about 17-18°C. Listed in the first batch of national ecological experimental cities, Yichun has a good ecological environment.

Yichun is rich in mineral resources, such as columbite-tantalite, lithium and limestone. Yichun Columbite-tantalite Mine, situated 25km from the downtown area, the largest tantalum, niobium and lithium deposit in China, has 19,533 tons of tantalum oxide of, 15,600 tons of niobium pentoxide and 752,207 tons of lithium oxide.

The transportation in Yichun is convenient. The State Highway 320, State Highway 105, the Shanghai-Ruijin Highway and the Ganyue Highway (the Jiangxi-Guangdong Highway) construct a comprehensive traffic network in the city.

 
Economic Features
 
In 2010, Yichun's GDP paced up 14.1% from the previous year to RMB 87 billion, ranking fifth among the 11 prefecture-level cities in the province.

Yichun is an agricultural production base in Jiangxi Province. In 2010, value-added output from the agricultural sector rose 6.6% from a year earlier to RMB 16.76 billion, comprising 19.3% of the city's GDP. It produced 3.78 million tons of crops in 2010, down 0.1%  year on year.

The secondary sector contributed over one half of the city's GDP. In 2010, the secondary sector realized RMB 49.22 billion in value-added output, making up 52.9% of the city's GDP. Value-added industrial output from enterprises with designated size and above grew 24.86% year on year to RMB 28.86 billion.

Energy, machinery, food and beverages, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, textile and chemicals are the main industries in Yichun. Their value-added industrial output soared 24.44% to RMB 24.11 billion, comprising 84% of the city's total. Examples of large industrial enterprises in the city include Jiangxi Special Electric Motor and Jiangxi Saint Liquor.

Jiangxi Special Electric Motor, listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2007, is a leading special electric motors manufacturer in China. It produces 21 different models. In 2009, its operating revenue was RMB 197 million and its net profit exceeded RMB 10 million.

Jiangxi Saint Liquor is headquartered in Zhangshu, a county-level city of Yichun. It is a major distilled liquor maker in Jiangxi Province.

The service sector also saw a strong growth in 2010. The value-added output from the service sector increased 9.7% year on year to RMB 21.01 billion, contributing 26.2% to the city's economy. Tourism is an important pillar of the city's service sector. In 2010, over 8 million tourists visited the city and brought RMB 6 billion in tourism income to the city.

The foreign trade value in the city totaled US$660 million in 2010, featuring a rise of 67.84% from the previous year. The export value hit US$557 million, up 69.2% year on year, while the import value stood at US$3 million. Raw chemicals, chemical products, food, and mechanical and electronic products are the major export products from the city.

In 2010, the utilized foreign direct investment (FDI) in Yichun climbed up 10.89% from a year earlier to US$361 million, ranking 7th among the 11 prefecture-level cities in Jiangxi Province.
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Yichun has a history of over 2,200 years. In 201BC during the Han Dynasty, Yichun was established in the region. Yichun has a profound Buddhist culture. "Can Lin Qing Gui", the monastic rules for Buddhists at the Buddhist temple, originated from Yichun. Yichun is also the birthplace for many famous literary figures, such as Tao Yuaming and Deng Gu, both of whom are great poets from ancient times.  

 
Tourist Attraction
 

Yichun has abundant historical, cultural and natural tourism resources. Hongzhou Kiln, a famous kiln of the Tang Dynasty, was first built during the Southern Dynasty (AD420-589). Wucheng Site of the Shang Dynasty was discovered in Yichun in 1973. Gezhao Mountain, situated in Zhangshu, is a famous Taoist mountain in China. It is home to a large number of ancient buildings as well as beautiful scenery. Tourists should also visit Guan Mountain Scenic Area, which is located at the juncture of Yifeng and Tonggu counties.

Yichun has various local dishes. Spicy Small Chicken, Fried Bamboo Roots, Fried Bean-curd, Beef with Rice Noodles, Yifeng Potato and Bean Dumpling, and Toasted Fish are delicious and beloved by many people.
