Hebi is a prefecture-level city lying in the northern part of Henan Province. Situated east of Taihang Mountain, the city is adjacent to Anyang to the north and Xinxiang to the south. Hebi covers an area of 2,182 sq km and has a population of 1.5 million. Located in the subtropical monsoon zone, the city enjoys a temperate, mild climate and four distinct seasons.
The city is a transportation hub in northern Henan Province, as the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Highway and the Hebi-Puyang Highway go through the city. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, situated 180 km from Hebi’s downtown, operates flights to over 20 domestic cities.
Hebi has plentiful mineral resources, such as coal, dolomite and limestone. The proven coal reserves in the city exceed 1.6 billion tons, while the proven reserves of dolomite, a major resource for magnesia, are about 1 billion tons.
Economic Features
Hebi's economy is relatively small in Henan Province. In 2010, the GDP of Hebi grew 13.2% from the previous year to RMB 42.77 billion, ranking the third smallest economy among the 17 prefecture-level cities in the province.
The value-added output from the agricultural sector rose 4.6% year on year to RMB 4.88 billion in 2010, contributing 11.4% to the city's economy. Secondary industry (industry and construction) and the service sector achieved RMB 30.19 billion and RMB 7.69 billion in value-added output, comprising 70.6% and 18% of the city's economy, respectively.
The value-added industrial output from enterprises with designated size and above soared 15.9% from a year earlier to RMB 28.34 billion in 2010. Heavy industry is predominant in the city's industrial sector. The value-added industrial output from heavy industry and light industry reached RMB 18.75 billion and 7.29 billion in 2010, taking up 72% and 28% of that from the city, respectively.
Agricultural products processing, coal mining and dressing, non-metal product manufacturing, electricity and heat production and supply, raw chemicals and chemical products, equipment manufacturing, metallurgy, and rubber products are the major industries in the city. Their combined value-added industrial output was RMB 20.79 billion, accouting for 79.83% of the city's total.
The foreign trade value in Hebi totaled US$144.54 million in 2010, increased 66.6% from the previous year. The export value was US$123.91 million, increased 61.8% year on year, while the import value amounted to US$20.63 million, with increase of 102.5% year on year. The export value of mechanical and electronic products increased 83.6% from a year earlier to US$84.25 million, accounting for 67.99% of the city's export value.
In 2010, 10 foreign-funded enterprises were set up in Hebi. Contractual foreign investments in the city stood at US$182.40 million, while the utilized FDI hit US$224.81 million, up 51.6% year on year.
Cultural Highlights
Hebi’s history can be traced back to the Xia Dynasty (2100BC-1600BC), when the region was partly under the administration of three shires, namely Jizhou, Yunzhou and Yuzhou, and belonged to three different kingdoms. In BC510, Qi State set up Muyi in Hebi, and in BC425 Zhao State moved its capital to Hebi. Hebi city was officially set up in 1957.
Hebi has a splendid culture. Legend has it that the first ancient army school was set up in Hebi. A great many literary figures, such as Tao Yuanming and Liu Zongyuan, have traveled into the city and praised the historical and cultural sites in the region.
Tourist Attraction
Hebi has plentiful historical and cultural sites, such as the Ancient Great Wall of the Warring States Period, the Ancient Porcelain Kiln Site of the Song Dynasty, and the Ancient Coal Mine Site of the Song Dynasty. The city is also rich in natural scenic spots, including Mount Yunmeng, Mount Dapi, Mount Fuqiu and the Qi River Natural Taichi Diagram. Mount Yumeng is situated southwest of Qixian and is reputed for its beautiful mountain scenery. Qi River Natural Taichi Diagram lies northwest of the urban city. It consists of many historical sites and beautiful river scenes.
Hebi has many tasty local snacks, including Can Si Ji Dan (colorful steaming eggs), Wangqiao Bean-curd and Dongling Grass Tea (made of Chinese medical herbs).
