Jiaozuo is situated in the northern part of Henan Province, on the northern bank of the Yellow River. The city borders the provincial capital city Zhengzhou to the south, Xinxiang to the east, Jiyuan to the west, Luoyang to the southwest and Shanxi Province to the north. The city covers an area of 4,071 sq km and has a population of 3.4 million.
Jiaozuo has a well-established railway and highway network. The Jiaozuo-Zhicheng Railway, the Jiaozuo-Taiyuan Railway, the Jiaozuo-Xinxiang Railway and the Yueshan-Houma Railway start from the city, connect the city with most cities in Shanxi and Henan Provinces. The Jiaozuo-Zhengzhou Highway and the Jiaozuo-Jincheng Highway run through the city.
The city has over 40 mineral resources, including coal, limestone and iron ores. The proven coal reserves in the city exceed 600 million tons. The demonstrated limestone reserves in the city are expected to exceed 10 billion tons. The sulfuric iron ore reserves in the city are about 34.75 million tons, accounting for 41% of Henan Province’s total.
Economic Features
Jiaozuo's GDP surpassed RMB 124.76 billion in 2010, featuring an increment of 11.9% from the previous year. Its GDP ranked sixth out of 17 prefecture-level cities in Henan Province.
The agricultural sector realized value-added output of RMB 10.33 billion in 2010, contributing 8.3% to the city's economy. The value-added output from the secondary industry and the service sector grew 14.7% and 6.5% to RMB 85.5 billion and RMB 28.9 billion, contributing 68.5% and 23.2% to the city's economy, respectively.
The value-added industrial output generated enterprises with designated size and above rose 17.3% to RMB 70.65 billion. Heavy industrial and light industrial enterprises with designated size and above generated value-added industrial output of RMB 45.22 billion and RMB 25.43 billion, constituting 16.5% and 18.8% of that from the city, respectively.
Aluminum product, auto and auto parts, chemicals, equipment manufacturing, food manufacturing and biotechnology are the pillar industries in the city. The combined value-added industrial output of the pillars amounted to RMB 39.98 billion, up 17.1% year on year.
The city is home to many large industrial enterprises, such as Jiaozuo Bigger Refractories and Jiaozuo Xin'an Science & Technology. Jiaozuo Bigger Refractories is engaged in the manufacture of refractory products. Xin'an Science & Technology, listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1997, specializes in raw chemicals and chemical products.
Tourism is an important industry of service sector. In 2010, more than 19.59 million tourists have visited the city, up 15.17% year on year. The tourism income rose 15.19% to RMB 14.75 billion. By the end of 2009, the city has seven listed companies in Mainland stock exchange.
The foreign trade value in the city increased 63% to US$1.76 billion in 2010, ranking fourth out of 17 prefecture-level cities in Henan Province. The export value hit US$1.07 billion, increase 53.9% year on year, while the import value amounted to US$686 million, with an increase of 79.8% year on year. Export value of high-tech products and machinery exceeded US$651 million, comprising 60.7% of the city's total export value.
In 2010, the city attracted 11 foreign-funded projects. The utilized FDI in the city soared 45.6% to US$288 million. GKN from Great Britain, Carrefour from France and Wal-Mart from the U.S. have set up businesses in the city.
Cultural Highlights
Jiaozuo has a history of over 8,000 years. During the Xia Dynasty (2100BC-1600BC), the territory was under the administration of Jinzhou. It bore different name in ancient history. Legend has it that Jiaozuo derives its name from a person whose surname was Jiao who opened a ceramic workshop in the territory. Jiaozuo city was set up on an industrial site left by the British after the Opium Wars.
Tourist Attraction
Jiaozuo has abundant tourism resources, such as the Yuntai Mountain Scenic Spot, the Jiaozuo Huanghe Movie & Television Town, Qingtaihe Scenic and Historic Interest Area, Shennongshan National Park and Jiaying Temple. Yuntai Mountain in Xiuwu County is famous for the 314-meter-high Yuntain Waterfall. Jiaozuo Huanghe Movie & Television Town, lying 1 km north of Jiaozuo’s downtown, is a large movie and TV base mainly reflecting the history of the Zhou Dynasty. The best season to visit Jiaozuo is from July to September, when it is neither too cold nor too hot.
Jiaozuo is well-known for flour foods such as Bai Ji Mo (a kind of pancake stuffed with beef), Ji Dan Guan Bing (pancake stuffed with fried eggs) and Baked Pancake.
