21 October 2010 – Stylish and glamorous eyewear pieces created by 10 local designers have won prizes in the 12th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition and will go on display at next month’s HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair, one of Asia leading optical events.

At a media conference today, winning and finalist entries in student and open group categories were put on display. Designers described how they were inspired by a variety of subjects, ranging from nature to world landmarks.

Eye on Innovation
One outstanding winning entry of the Open Group was also chosen to receive the special Grand Award and The Greatest Creativity Award. Bo Bo Lai of OKIA Optical Company Ltd said she designed her “Lashes-Fly” sunglasses for “lovers of natural beauty who seldom wear make-up.” She said the eyewear was inspired by human eyelashes as well as the image of a butterfly.

Szeto Ka Ki’s “La Tour Eiffel” is a pair of sunglasses designed to “reflect the shadow of the Eiffel Tower under the sun.” The designer said he aims to “transform original works of art into fashion trends.”

In the student category, Yiu Hoi Lun of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee) came up with “Sakura.” He said his design recalls the life cycle of a cherry tree blossom, which is “passionate, pure and noble and represents fate.”

Seeing the World
Ten winning and 14 finalist entries in the competition will be displayed at the Hall 1D concourse during the Hong Kong Optical Fair, which this year welcomes some 550 exhibitors from 21 countries and regions. The 3-5 November event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) celebrates its 18th year with a wide variety of optical design, manufacturing, retail and related services exhibits. The 2009 fair drew more than 10,000 trade buyers from 96 countries and regions.

Pavilions will feature exhibitors from the Chinese mainland, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association. Some 165 exhibitors will also join in the largest specialty section called Eyewear, Frames, Lenses and Accessories.

Brand Collections
The fair’s Brand Name Gallery will showcase over 80 brands from 19 countries and regions. Among the major brands on exhibit include local brand Deary, Holemans from Belgium, Ports 1961 from Canada, Daniel Hechter, Ted Lapidus and Mikli from France, Yanagi Gawa from Japan, Etnia Barcelona from Spain, and the US’s Columbia and John Varvatos etc. Adding glamour to the Brand Name Gallery will be two catwalk-style eyewear parades to be held on the first day of the fair. Other fair highlights include the participation of two groups of eyewear designers from Italy and Japan.

The eighth Hong Kong Optometric Conference will be held on the second day of the fair. Organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong Optometric Association and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the conference will cover a variety of topics related to eye care for the elderly. Speakers from ophthalmology and optometric institutes in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States will take part alongside local speakers, including professors from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong Society for the Blind.

Seminars in Sight
On the opening day of the fair, a seminar will address the optics market in Europe and Asia, welcoming speakers from renowned market research company GfK Asia. Speakers from the US and Italy are also expected for a seminar spotlighting the latest trends in eyewear and fashion design.

The Optical Fair will be held concurrently with the HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair and the HKTDC Hong Kong International Medical Devices and Supplies Fair.

Hong Kong is the world’s third-largest exporter of optical goods after Italy and the US. In the first eight months of 2010, Hong Kong’s exports of spectacles, lenses and frames amounted to HK$9.13 billion (US$1.17 billion), up 16 per cent over the same period last year.
