17 October 2011 – The 19th HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair, which runs 3-5 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, will be the first exhibition in Hong Kong to use Quick Response (QR) code technology. The innovation will allow thousands of exhibitors and buyers to connect instantly.
Registered buyers can use smartphones to obtain exhibitor profiles and e-catalogues by scanning the QR code at each exhibition booth. They will receive an email within 24 hours summarising details of all exhibitors they visited. (Visit www.hktdc.com/qr for more information.)
Sourcing Efficiency
"This service enhances sourcing efficiency and reduces the cost of printing exhibitor collaterals. It also marks a significant step towards paperless exhibitions," said Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau, speaking at a press conference today for the upcoming optical fair.

The 13th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition winners were also announced today. Chu Kong Optical Manufactory Ltd, Kool Look International Company Ltd and OKIA Optical Company Ltd were honoured as champion, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively in the Corporate Group section.
Corporate Group champion designer Cheng Wai Kwong epitomised the Hong Kong industry’s creativity with his "Renaissance" spectacles, which make use of far infrared rays (FIR) to help wearers recover from fatigue.
Individual Group Champion, Creativity Award and Made-to-Sell Award winner Lai Pui Yan was equally innovative with "Show. Big," which features a magnifying glass look to remind adults of the beauty that surrounds them. "I hope my work can remind the public to be curious and increase the desire for knowledge and discovery," she said. Wong Ming Sum and Chan Yuk Ting from the Hong Kong Design Institute were named first-and second runners-up in the Individual Group section.
All winning and finalist pieces will be on display at the Wine Cellar, Hall 1B, throughout the Hong Kong Optical Fair.
Product Zones
This year’s fair features nearly 600 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions. Fair highlights include the inaugural Contact Lens & Accessories zone and the Brand Name Gallery. The Brand Name Gallery presents more than 140 eye-catching brands from 17 countries and regions, including Guy Laroche, New York Yankees, my Deary and Sandwalk.
Visionary Events
The ninth Hong Kong Optometric Conference 4 November, with its "Vision for the Next Generation" theme, will spotlight myopia, bringing together optometrists and neuroscience experts from Canada, Finland, Hong Kong and Singapore. The fair will also feature informative seminars on optical markets and standards, as well as Brand Name Gallery Eyewear Parades.
The Optical Fair is a fitting showcase for one of Hong Kong’s leading export industries, which shipped spectacles, lenses and frames worth US$1.3 billion from January to August this year – a 14 per cent increase, year-on-year. Exports to the United Arab Emirates and Russia, in particular, showed significant growth.
The HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair is organised by the HKTDC, with the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association as co-organiser.
