Hotels on the Chinese mainland experienced a severe fall away of business at the end of 2008, with large "no frills" or economy hotel chains posting profit drops. But now the cheaper rate hotels are back in force in Xian, able to achieve substantial growth in the North West.

Hospitality sector goes large in the UAE
At least US$277 billion is to be poured into the burgeoning Dubai hospitality sector over the next eight years, when 55 developments are due to be completed. Another 69 hotel and other related Dubai projects are scheduled over the period, with emirates Abu Dhabi and Sharjah also producing massively.

Qingdao among first for an underwater hotel
The Qingdao subsidiary of British Crescent Hydropolis Resorts (CHR) has signed a framework agreement with the Laoshan government to build an underwater hotel in Qingdao. Tourists will be able to experience the wonders of "underwater life" in three years time.

After two years of gestation, budget business hotels are gradually coming of age in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, with several properties beginning to see a better class of sales.
