China bans poultry imports from Canada

China has banned Canadian poultry imports attributed by the H7N3 avian influenza virus. The implementation of this ban is extended to all poultry and related imports from Canada, after September 23.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the General Administration of Quality Supervision made the decision, preceded by the World Organization for animal health (QIE)'s vigilant concern about the virus. All Canadian poultry products must go through the examination of China's entry-exit inspection and quarantine departments before they can enter China.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the poultry products had been secluded since last week, after the discovery of the bird flu, which is not lethal to humans. But the international organization based in Paris warned that around 540 roosters have died in one barn containing nearly 600 birds. Another 49,100 roosters and broiler breeders held in other nine barns nearby are affected.
